TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus consisting of an emitter of electromagnetic radiation and a detector of EM radiation is described, where the emitter may be disabled at least temporarily to allow the detector to detect electromagnetic radiation from a source other than an EM source, such as ambient light.
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods to sense proximity and to detect light. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an emitter of electromagnetic radiation and a detector of electromagnetic radiation; the detector has a sensor to detect electromagnetic radiation from the emitter when sensing proximity, and to detect electromagnetic radiation from a source other than the emitter when sensing visible light. The emitter may be disabled at least temporarily to allow the detector to detect electromagnetic radiation from a source other than the emitter, such as ambient light. In one implementation, the ambient light is measured by measuring infrared wavelengths. Also, a fence having a non-IR transmissive material disposed between the emitter and the detector to remove electromagnetic radiation emitted by the emitter. Other apparatuses and methods and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.

TL;DR: In this paper, a first input is detected, and an application view selection mode is entered for selecting one of concurrently open applications for display in a corresponding application view, and a gesture is detected on a respective open application icon in the first predefined area.
Abstract: A method includes displaying a first application view. A first input is detected, and an application view selection mode is entered for selecting one of concurrently open applications for display in a corresponding application view. An initial group of open application icons in a first predefined area and at least a portion of the first application view adjacent to the first predefined area are concurrently displayed. The initial group of open application icons corresponds to at least some of the concurrently open applications. A gesture is detected on a respective open application icon in the first predefined area, and a respective application view for a corresponding application is displayed without concurrently displaying an application view for any other application in the concurrently open applications. The open application icons in the first predefined area cease to be displayed, and the application view selection mode is exited.

TL;DR: A method of speech recognition which determines acoustic features in a sound sample; recognizes words comprising the acoustic features based on a language model, which determines the possible sequences of words that may be recognized; and the selection of an appropriate response based on the words recognized.
Abstract: A method of speech recognition which determines acoustic features in a sound sample; recognizes words comprising the acoustic features based on a language model, which determines the possible sequences of words that may be recognized; and the selection of an appropriate response based on the words recognized. Information about what words may be recognized, under which conditions those words may be recognized, and what response is appropriate when the words are recognized, is stored, in a preferred embodiment, in a data structure called a speech rule. These speech rules are partitioned according to the context in which they are active. When speech is detected, concurrent with acoustic feature extraction, the current state of the computer system is used to determine which rules are active and how they are to be combined in order to generate a language model for word recognition. A language model is dynamically generated and used to find the best interpretation of the acoustic features as a word sequence. This word sequence is then matched against active rules in order to determine the appropriate response. Rules that match all or part of the word sequence contribute data structures representing the "meaning" of the word sequence, and these data structures are used by the rule actions in order to generate an appropriate response to the spoken utterance.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for maintaining information in a network of computer systems and for controlling the display of searchable information is presented, which includes a first processor having a first display device and being coupled to an information storage device having information stored in at least one information source, where the first processor is coupled to a network.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining information in a network of computer systems and for controlling the display of searchable information. The apparatus includes a first processor having a first display device and being coupled to an information storage device having information stored in at least one information source, where the first processor is coupled to a network. An input device is coupled to the first processor, where the input device is for selecting the information source to provide a selected information source which is to be unavailable for searching. A second processor having a second display device is coupled to the network to communicate with the first processor. The second display device is for displaying an indicia of information source, where the second display device displayed the indicia of the information source when the information source has not been selected by the input device. When the input device has selected the information source the indicia at some point in time after the information source has been selected is no longer displayed on the second display device. The method includes displaying on a first display device to a first indicia which corresponds to an information source stored on an information storage device. The method further includes displaying on the second display device a second indicia corresponding to the information source, this second indicia being displayed when the information source is not selected by the input device. When the information source is selected, at some time after selection, the second indicia is longer displayed on the second display device.

TL;DR: In this article, an electronic device for providing tactile feedback is described, and the electronic device may provide tactile feedback using any suitable approach, including vibration, heat, electrical, visual, or any other type of feedback.
Abstract: An electronic device for providing tactile feedback is provided. The electronic device may provide tactile feedback using any suitable approach, including for example vibration, heat, electrical, visual, or any other type of feedback. The electronic device may provide tactile feedback in response to detecting any particular status of the electronic device, receiving any particular input, or detecting any suitable communication received by the electronic device. For example, the electronic device may provide tactile feedback in response to identifying the current network of the device, the status of a particular electronic device component, or any other electronic device status. As another example, the electronic device may provide tactile feedback in response to receiving a particular type of communication, or in response to receiving a communication from a particular contact. As still another example, the electronic device may provide tactile feedback in response to receiving a particular user input, or to detecting a user's finger on a particular portion of the electronic device.
