Abstract: An architecture and method for emulating guest instructions with host instructions, executable on a host computer, based on a translation scheme. The architecture includes a guest instruction memory and program counter and a RAM memory storing host instructions, in which an address word stored in the program counter is mapped to the RAM memory to access the host instructions. The method constitutes dynamically recompiling (DR) host instructions including providing one memory which stores host instructions, providing in other memory having line entries for storing a fixed number of dynamically recompiled host instructions, and copying a host instruction from the one memory into a line entry of the other memory.

Abstract: A method includes, at an electronic device with a display and a touch-sensitive surface: concurrently displaying a first text entry area and an unsplit keyboard on the display; detecting a gesture on the touch-sensitive surface; and, in response to detecting the gesture on the touch-sensitive surface, replacing the unsplit keyboard with an integrated input area. The integrated input area includes a left portion with a left side of a split keyboard, a right portion with a right side of the split keyboard, and a center portion in between the left portion and the right portion.

Abstract: A data transfer technique in which lossy connections or temporarily interrupted network links neither prevent data transfer nor substantially impair the ease with which a user can transfer data. A sender is advised of receivers on a network that are available to receive data over the network. Also, while data transfer from a sender to a receiver is being performed, the availability of the receiver is monitored. If, during the data transfer, the receiver becomes unavailable to receive the data, then the data transmission stops and the sender is informed that the receiver has become unavailable. The sender continues to monitor the network to determine if the receiver has regained its availability. If the receiver regains availability, the sender is able to automatically resume the data transmission, provided the availability is regained before the network connection is completely lost. The invention is useful for wireless networks as well as wired networks.

Abstract: Assigning meanings to spoken utterances in a speech recognition system. A plurality of speech rules is generated, each of the of speech rules comprising a language model and an expression associated with the language model. At one interval (e.g. upon the detection of speech in the system), a current language model is generated from each language model in the speech rules for use by a recognizer. When a sequence of words is received from the recognizer, a set of speech rules which match the sequence of words received from the recognizer is determined. Each expression associated with the language model in each of the set of speech rules is evaluated, and actions are performed in the system according to the expressions associated with each language model in the set of speech rules.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for manipulating inked objects in a computer system includes the steps of displaying a first recognized object on a computer screen and displaying a first ink object on the screen which was previously recognized as the first recognized object. The first ink object is edited to create a second ink object, and the second ink object is recognized as a second recognized object. The first recognized object is then replaced with the second recognized object. The method also preferably includes a step of selecting the first recognized object, and the first ink object is displayed in response to the selection step. A preferred method of selecting the first recognized object is to move a stylus within a predetermined distance or bounding box of the first recognized object. Editing the first ink object preferably includes adding or deleting a portion of the ink object, inserting a space between characters of the ink object, replacing a portion of the ink object, and adding new ink to the ink object. Alternate embodiments include moving the recognized object to different locations on the screen in relation to the first ink object, and determining in advance if the path of the stylus in moving toward the bounding box of the recognized object. The method and apparatus of the present invention permits convenient and quick manipulation of inked objects and correction of recognized objects displayed on a pen computer system.
