TL;DR: Five statistical parameters of backscattered speckle images that give self-consistent data on changes in blood flow rate changes are selected and shown to qualitatively agree with general considerations on the effects of reduced or increased blood flow rates on the selected integral quantities.
Abstract: Experimental data on the hemodynamics of dental pulp at different stages of caries treatment are given Observations of speckle patterns in backscattered laser light are used as a measurement method to qualitatively characterize changes in blood flow rate through the dental pulp The measurements were made by the author-designed experimental setup Theoretical estimations showed that stationary reflected light from an in vivo tooth contains a negligibly small information body on changes in the pulpal blood flow due to the shadowing of the pulp by optically thick enamel and dentin Therefore, the temporal variations in the speckle patterns are the only possible way that can provide monitoring of blood conditions in the pulp by using backscattered light Various statistical characteristics of the random reflected light fields are studied as indicators of blood flow rate changes There were selected five statistical parameters of backscattered speckle images that give self-consistent data on these changes The parameters include four combinations of integrals of the Fourier transforms of the observed temporal variations as well as the speckle image contrast The selected parameters are shown to qualitatively agree with general considerations on the effects of reduced or increased blood flow rates on the selected integral quantities

TL;DR: Determining the stages for development of the dynamic object using integral optical flow improves the accuracy in predicting the evolution of such objects and improves the quality of solutions to many problems involving automation of monitoring complex motion of dynamic objects.
Abstract: We propose an algorithm for monitoring dynamic objects using integral optical flow, based on constructing a zone of interest for the motion and determining the vector structures, which let us determine the state of moving objects as the nature of the motion changes. Using the algorithm, we can analyze not only the motion of the object as a whole but also its internal changes. Determining the stages for development of the dynamic object using integral optical flow improves the accuracy in predicting the evolution of such objects and improves the quality of solutions to many problems involving automation of monitoring complex motion of dynamic objects.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that VEGF -2578A/C and +936C/T polymorphisms are among the factors determining the individual peculiarities of NSCLC course in this population and can be used for clarifying the prognosis of the disease.
Abstract: UNLABELLED The angiogenesis is an important process in the pathogenesis of malignancies. It is regulated by various growth factors, with the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) playing the central role. The aim of the present study was to evaluate possible associations of functional VEGF -2578C>A, -634G>C, and +936C>T polymorphisms with the risk for occurrence and progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in patients living in Republic of Belarus. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 202 patients (147 males and 55 females) diagnosed as having the NSCLC. The control group consisted of 336 individuals (245 males and 91 females) without an oncopathology. The total DNA was isolated from peripheral blood. We investigated the single nucleotide polymorphisms of VEGF (rs 2010963), (rs 699947), (rs 3025039). The genotyping was performed by PCR-RFLP analysis. RESULTS Our results revealed a marginally significant association of the -2578CC genotype (p=0.002) with a greater degree of tumor spread (Т2-Т4). Heterozygous genotypes -2578СА and +936СT carriers were included into the follow-up group significantly more often (р=0.021 and р=0.012, respectively). Our study demonstrate that VEGF -2578A/C and +936C/T polymorphisms are among the factors determining the individual peculiarities of NSCLC course in this population and can be used for clarifying the prognosis of the disease.

TL;DR: The tested antiseptics did not cause inflammation and reduced IL-1β-induced secretion of inflammatory mediators and collagenase by gingival fibroblasts, which suggests anti-inflammatory properties.
Abstract: Objective: Polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG-P) was compared to chlorhexidine (CHX) in order to determine potential cytotoxic and immune-modulatory effects on human gingival fibroblasts.Materials and methods: Cytotoxic effects of PHMG-P and CHX on human gingival fibroblasts were assessed using cell viability assay at various time points and concentrations. The effects of PHMG-P and CHX on the secretion of prostaglandin (PG) E2, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 by non-stimulated or IL-1β stimulated fibroblasts were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results: PHMG-P concentration 0.00009% led to the total loss of fibroblast viability within 24 h, whereas inhibition of fibroblast viability by CHX occurred at significantly higher concentrations of 0.0009% (p < .001). Short-term exposure to 0.005% PHMG-P led to loss of fibroblast viability after 5 min, whilst cells exposed to 0.005% CHX survived 30 min of treatment (p < .001). IL-1β stimulation induce...

TL;DR: Academic performances (the Grade Point Average and the effectiveness to sit for examinations) of all participants from the 1st to 6th semesters of university education were used as objective criteria for problems related with alcohol use.
Abstract: Materials and methods Students (n = 46, mean age 21 yrs) from three major universities (Belarusian State Medical University, Belarusian State Agro-Technical University and Belarusian State National Technical University) in Minsk, Belarus agreed to participate in the randomized anonymous study All participants received questionnaire containing the AUDIT, MAST, CAGE and other alcohol related questions Examination scores of each participant were filled into the questionnaire on “Academic Performance” from their examination booklets and were controlled by our researcher, Dr MO Welcome Academic performances (the Grade Point Average and the effectiveness to sit for examinations) of all participants from the 1st to 6th semesters of university education were used as objective criteria for problems related with alcohol use The Pearson c2 and Student’s t-tests were employed for analysis of results The probability value for significance was set at p < 005
