Abstract: This paper reports findings on the significance of management communication strategies to telecommuting, based on a survey of telecommuters at IBM Australia. With increased adoption of telecommuting, many strategies have been proffered to ensure that telecommuters have appreciable levels of job satisfaction. Low levels of job satisfaction can lead to unduly rapid employee turnover that is detrimental to business operation. The objective of this paper is to ascertain the perceptions of telecommuters at IBM Australia on a number of telecommuting practice measures, and to suggest how job satisfaction can be improved and maintained at high levels by giving greater attention to particular communication management strategies in Australia. Although the management communication strategies proffered in the literature appear to apply generally, this study concludes that a few aspects are distinctively applicable to the Australian environment. Those aspects should be specifically noted by those interested in benefiting from telecommuting practice.

Abstract: The first dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) developed by Gratzel and O’Regan in 1991 was inspired by the energy and electron transfer mechanisms that occur in photosynthesis. An organometallic dye is used as a light harvester to produce excited electrons that are injected into the conduction band of a mesoporous nanocrystalline semiconductor film, most commonly titanium dioxide (TiO2), which is sintered on the surface of an electrically conducting glass plate to form the photoanode. A regenerative photovoltaic (PV) cell can be constructed by adding a second conducting glass plate as a counterelectrode and filling the intervening space with a suitable redox electrolyte. The semiconductor layer has a very high surface-to-volume ratio and this results in an effective surface area for light absorption that is 1000 times greater than for a dye monolayer on a solid surface. Consequently, the light-harvesting ability of the adsorbed dye is greatly enhanced. The identification of sintered mesoporous titanium dioxide as a highly effective photoanode was the breakthrough that established DSSC technology as a credible alternative to solid-state PVs, and raised the efficiency from <1% (for cells having a nonporous titanium dioxide surface) to 7.1% in 1991. More recently, DSSC systems capable of efficiencies exceeding 11% have been developed by refining the cell materials – in particular, the choice of dye and the formulation of the electrolyte solution.

Abstract: The loss of bulk in hand–knitting yarns as a result of package dyeing has been investigated. Simulated dyeing of packages, prepared with and without axial compression, has revealed a correlation between the bulk of the relaxed dyed yarns and the permanent longitudinal set imparted to the yarns. The strain in the yarn in the wet package, and hence the longitudinal set, is related to the hygral expansion of the yarn and the strain imposed on the yarn during winding of the package. The role of axial compression of the package in determining loss of bulk is also considered. Finally it is shown that by adding reagents to the dyebath that inhibit the setting reaction, the loss of bulk can be markedly decreased, provided also that the yarns are fully relaxed after being dyed.
