TL;DR: In this paper, a discrete analogue of a generalized Toda equation and its Backlund transformations are obtained, where the equation is expressed with the bilinear form as follows, where Z i and D i for i = 1, 2, 3, are an arbitrary parameter and a linear combination of the binary operators D t, D x, D y, D n, etc.
Abstract: A discrete analogue of a generalized Toda equation and its Backlund transformations are obtained. The equation is expressed with the bilinear form as follows \begin{aligned} [Z_{1} \exp (D_{1})+Z_{2} \exp (D_{2})+Z_{3} \exp (D_{3})]f \cdot f=0 \end{aligned} where Z i and D i for i =1, 2, 3, are an arbitrary parameter and a linear combination of the binary operators D t , D x , D y , D n , etc., respectively. The equation is very generic, namely appropriate combinations of parameters give various types of soliton equations including the Korteweg-de Vries equation, Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, modified KdV equation, sine-Gordon equation, nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, Benjamin-Ono equation and various types of discrete analogues of soliton equations.

TL;DR: A preliminary double-blind controlled study on the prophylactic effect of carbamazepine on recurrent manic-depressive psychotics was conducted with 22 patients using an inert placebo in ten subjects as a control drug, and it is suggested that carbamazepsine is a useful drug for theProphylaxis of manic- Depressive illness.
Abstract: A preliminary double-blind controlled study on the prophylactic effect of carbamazepine on recurrent manic-depressive psychotics was conducted with 22 patients using an inert placebo in ten subjects as a control drug. Carbamazepine in the dosage of 200-600 mg was administered for 1 year. Among the 22 carbamazepine subjects, carbamazepine was found to be effective in 60% of the cases and inert placebo in 22.2% (U-test, P less than 0.10). It is suggested that carbamazepine is a useful drug for the prophylaxis of manic-depressive illness.

TL;DR: A study of four XY moles is described, and evidence that they result from the fertilization of an empty egg by two haploid spermatozoa is provided.
Abstract: Complete hydatidiform mole is an abnormal human pregnancy with grossly swollen chorionic villi, usually with a 46,XX karyotype, and with a propensity to malignancy1. The XX moles originate from fertilization of an ‘empty egg’ (resulting from either enucleation or inactivation of the female pronucleus) by a haploid sperm and its subsequent duplication2,3, a process called diploid androgenesis. XY moles, although infrequent, are of special interest because their origin must differ from that of the XX moles. Two XY moles have been studied for their origin, but the results were inconclusive3,4. We describe here a study of four XY moles, and provide evidence that they result from the fertilization of an empty egg by two haploid spermatozoa.

TL;DR: Nonadherent tissue culture cell lines were established from normal bone marrow of a variety of mouse strains and contained committed stem cells for metachromatic cells and lack of tumorigenicity despite long-term culture makes these cell lines potentially important for studies of the mechanisms of allergic reactions and inflammation.
Abstract: Nonadherent tissue culture cell lines were established from normal bone marrow of a variety of mouse strains. The lines possessed morphological and histochemical markers of the basophil/mast cell and contained committed stem cells for metachromatic cells. Their derivation from normal marrow and their lack of tumorigenicity despite long-term culture makes these cell lines potentially important for studies of the mechanisms of allergic reactions and inflammation as well as the differentiation pathways involving this subset of hematopoietic cells.

TL;DR: It is concluded that Mycoplasma capricolum chromosome carries at least two sets of genes for 16S, 23S and 5S rRNAs.
Abstract: We have examined the number of rRNA genes in Mycoplasma capricolum (KID) by hybridization of BglII-, EcoRI- and XbaI-digests of DNA to [3′-32P] 16S, 23S and 5S rRNAs according to the Southern procedure (1975). All the restriction gels gave two radioactive bands with three kinds of rRNA. Furthermore, band positions were indistinguishable from one another when 16S, 23S and 5S rRNAs were used as probes, indicating that each band contains sequences corresponding to the 3′-termini of 16S, 23S and 5S rRNAs. It is thus concluded that Mycoplasma capricolum chromosome carries at least two sets of genes for 16S, 23S and 5S rRNAs.

TL;DR: A standard nomenclature for yeast ribosomal proteins is proposed, in which the designations YS1–YS29 and YL1–YL44 have been given to the small sub unit proteins and the large subunit proteins respectively.
Abstract: A tentative nomenclature (YP number) for yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cytoplasmic ribosomal proteins, which is used in our laboratory (Otaka and Kobata 1978; Higo and Otaka 1979), has been correlated with those of Warner and Gorenstein (1978) and several others. Our nomenclature is based on the two-dimensional gel electrophoretic pattern of proteins as analyzed by a modified method of Mets and Bogorad (1974), while others have used various modifications of Kaltschmidt and Wittmann's two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1970). The method of correlation involved the examination in our twodimensional electrophoresis system of each protein spot excised from gel patterns prepared by Kaltschmidt and Wittmann's method or vice versa.

Abstract: The dielectric constant, specific heat and thermal expansion of CsHSeO 4 were measured as functions of temperature, and X-ray examination was also made. It was found that CsHSeO 4 undergoes a phase transition at 128°C. The crystal at room temperature is monoclinic with a space group P2/ c . The transition entropy was estimated from the specific heat to be Δ S =16.1 J·mol -1 deg -1 .

TL;DR: The results suggest that when SP is released from nerve terminals, it is hydrolysed into (5–11)SP before or after acting as a neurotransmitter, which is in turn accumulated into nerve terminals.
Abstract: We previously reported that nerve terminals and glial cells lack an active uptake system capable of terminating transmitter action of substance P (SP). In the present study, we demonstrated the existence of an active uptake system for SP carboxy-terminal heptapeptide, (5-11)SP. When the slices from either rat brain or rabbit spinal cord were incubated with [3H](5-11)SP, the uptake of (5-11)SP into slices was observed. The uptake system has the properties of an active transport mechanism: it is dependent on temperature and sensitive to hypoosmotic treatment and is inhibited by ouabain and dinitrophenol (DNP). In the brain, (5-11)SP was accumulated by means of a high-affinity and a low-affinity uptake system. The Km and the Vmax values for the high-affinity system were 4.20 x 10(-8) M and 7.59 fmol/10 mg wet weight/min, respectively, whereas these values for the low-affinity system were 1.00 x 10(-6) M and 100 fmol/10 mg wet weight/min, respectively. In the spinal cord, there was only one uptake system, with a Km value of 2.16 x 10(-7) M and Vmax value of 26.2 fmol/10 mg wet weight/min. These results suggest that when SP is released from nerve terminals, it is hydrolysed into (5-11)SP before or after acting as a neurotransmitter, which is in turn accumulated into nerve terminals. Therefore, the uptake system may represent a possible mechanism for the inactivation of SP.

TL;DR: In this article, measurements of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and NMR have been made for (Co 1- x Mn x ) 2 P single crystal compounds, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants are both negative and their absolute values take maxima at x = 0.5.
Abstract: Measurements of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and NMR have been made for (Co 1- x Mn x ) 2 P single crystal compounds. The compounds with orthorhombic structure are ferromagnetic for 0.06< x <0.63, ferromagnetic at high temperatures and screw antiferromagnetic at low temperatures for 0.63 ≤ x ≤0.73 and antiferromagnetic for 0.73 ≤ x ≤0.80. The magnetic moments of Mn I and Mn II are expected to have about 1 and 3 µ B , respectively, from the measurement of NMR. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants K 1 and K 2 are both negative and their absolute values take maxima at x =0.5. The Curie temperatures and saturation magnetic moments for x ≤0.5 compounds are briefly discussed with the exchange interaction and the local environment of Mn II site.

TL;DR: The availability and global improvement of TCUK were better than those of placebo in their statistical significance and the clinical effects were more significant in patient groups of mild or moderate grades in the severity of disorders.
Abstract: A multi-center double blind study for the clinical evaluation of TCUK was carried out on 115 patients with cerebral thrombosis. The administration of TCUK was done continuously in doses of 60, 000 I. U. for 7 days under comparison with negative placebo. The study was performed according to the protocol, shown in Table 1-6 and the effects of TCUK were judged by the grade of improvement of apparent subjective complaints, disturbances of consciousness, motorius and sensorial disorders of extremities and comprehensive daily life activities. The total scoring of improvements in individual disorders and their comprehensive evaluation were made for judgement of the global improvement and availability of the drugs, obtaining the following conclusions:(1) The availability, particularly the global improvement of TCUK were better than those of placebo in their statistical significance (Table 10).(2) In the serial evaluations, the clinical effects were more significant in patient groups of mild or moderate grades in the severity of disorders, of ages between 40-69, without histories of brain damages and without simultaneous infusions of large amount of solutions.(3) The side effects of TCUK were rare (Table 11) with only two exceptional cases with disturbance of liver functions (Table 18), but the relationship between this liver function disturbance and administration of TCUK was obscure and no cases of hemorrhagic infarction were found in connection with TCUK administration in this study.

TL;DR: In comparison with other CEPs, the strength of CMX varied according to the kinds of bacteria, and its antibacterial activity against non-fermentation bacteria was relatively weak except P. putrefaciens, Alcaligenes and Comamonas.
Abstract: We examined the antibacterial activity of MX in comparison with those of other CEPs, using aerobic Gram-positive cocci, aerobic Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobic bacteria, 870 strains in total, all isolated from clinical specimens, in 1979 and 1980. Against Streptococcus, CMX showed superior antibacterial activity than those of CFX, CMZ, CXM and CTM. Against H. influenzae, CMX also showed superior antibacterial activity than those of CFX, CMX, CXM, CTM and CEZ. ABPC-and PIPC-resistant strains were sensitive to CMX. CTX, CPZ and CZX also showed antibacterial activities equivalent to that of CMX. Against enteric bacteria, E. coli, Klebsiella, E. cloacae, Serratia, C. freundii and Proteus, CMX showed superior antibacterial activity than those of CFX, CMZ, CXM, CTM and CEZ. Especially, against E. coli, Klebsiella, P. mirabilis, P. rettgeri and P. inconstans, CMX showed strong antibacterial activity. As to non-fermentation bacteria, CMX's antibacterial activity was relatively weak except P. putrefaciens, Alcaligenes and Comamonas. However, it was superior than that of CEZ. In comparison with other CEPs, the strength of CMX varied according to the kinds of bacteria. As to anaerobic bacteria, CMX showed strong antibacterial activity against Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, Lactobacillus, Propionibacterium, C. perfringens, Veillonella and Fusobacterium. However, its antibacterial activity against Bacteroides was similar to those of other CEPs.
