Abstract: The current study examined the nature of retrospective recall of affect in depressed participants and nonclinical controls. Utilising the Experience Sampling Method, we compared average momentary affect reports to retrospective summaries of the same period of time. Both groups exhibited exaggerated retrospective summaries of positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA). Greater bias for PA than NA was found in the controls but not the depressed. Across groups, depressed individuals exhibited more absolute inaccuracy in their recall of NA but not PA. For depressed and nonclinical individuals, retrospective summaries of PA were better predicted by an average of all weekly momentary PA than a combination of the most intense (“peak”) PA and most recent (“end”) PA experiences. For nonclinical participants, retrospective NA was better predicted by an average of all weekly momentary NA. Abstract: — The content of glutamate, GABA, aspartate, glycine and alanine was determined in the cerebellum, brain stem and cerebrum of three different mutant mice which have been named ‘staggerer’, ‘weaver’ and ‘nervous’ on the basis of neurological symptoms. In the ‘staggerer’ and ‘weaver’ mutants there is an almost complete absence of granule cells in the cerebellar cortex while in the ‘nervous’ mutant there is a loss of Purkinje cells (and to a lesser extent a loss of granule cells) in the cerebellar cortex. In the cerebellum of the ‘weaver’ mutant, the content of glutamate was signficantly lower (P < 0.025) than control values (8.77 ± 0.76 vs 12.0 ± 1.3 μmol/g tissue wet wt) and the contents of GABA and glycine were significantly greater than normal levels. In the cerebellum of the ‘staggerer’ mutant, the content of glutamate was significantly lower (6.62 ± 0.70 μmol/g) and the contents of glycine and alanine significantly higher than control values. In the cerebrum and brain stem regions of the staggerer mutant, weaver mutant and the normals the contents of the five amino acids were the same. The contents of glycine and alanine in the cerebellum, GARA and glycine in the brain stem and GABA and alanine in the cerebrum of the nervous mutants were higher than control values. The data are discussed in terms of a possible role for glutamate functioning as an excitatory transmitter when released from the cerebellar granule cells.

Abstract: In two-component signal transduction, an input triggers phosphorylation of receiver domains that regulate the status of output modules. One such module is the AAA+ ATPase domain in bacterial enhancer-binding proteins that remodel the sigma(54) form of RNA polymerase. We report X-ray solution scattering and electron microscopy structures of the activated, full-length nitrogen-regulatory protein C (NtrC) showing a novel mechanism for regulation of AAA+ ATPase assembly via the juxtaposition of the receiver domains and ATPase ring. Accompanying the hydrolysis cycle that is required for transcriptional activation, we observed major order-disorder changes in the GAFTGA loops involved in sigma(54) binding, as well as in the DNA-binding domains.

Abstract: Powdered adsorbent prepared from Albizia lebbeck pods as agricultural waste has been used for the adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The powdered adsorbent was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller. Effects of various parameters like contact time, solution pH, initial concentration dosage and temperature were investigated on a batch adsorption system. Equilibrium and kinetic experiments were carried out at the optimum pH of 6, 8 and 10 at 29 °C using particle size of 250 μm for Cd(II), Pb(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II) ions. Changes in free energy, enthalpy and entropy were also evaluated. The adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model with correlation coefficient ( $$R^{2} > 0.94$$ ), whereas the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters proved that adsorption of metal ions is endothermic and non-spontaneous at low temperatures, while spontaneity occurred at higher temperatures. This study shows that powdered Albizia lebbeck pods prove to be a promising inexpensive adsorbent for metal ion removal from aqueous solutions.
