Abstract: This paper proposes a new approach based on augmented Lagrangian relaxation for short term generation scheduling problems with transmission and environmental constraints. In this method, the power system constraints, e.g. load demand, spinning reserve, transmission capacity and environmental constraints, are relaxed by using Lagrangian multipliers, and quadratic penalty terms associated with power system load demand balance are added to the Lagrangian objective function. Then, the decomposition and coordination technique is used, and nonseparable quadratic penalty terms are replaced by linearization around the solution obtained from the previous iteration. In order to improve the convergence property, the exactly convex quadratic terms of decision variables are added to the objective function as strongly convex, differentiable and separable auxiliary functions. The overall problem is decomposed into N subproblems, multipliers and penalty coefficients are updated in the dual problem and power system constraints are satisfied iteratively. The corresponding unit commitment subproblems are solved by dynamic programming, and the economic dispatch with transmission and environmental constraints is solved by an efficient network flow programming algorithm. The augmented Lagrangian relaxation method enhanced by the decomposition and coordination techniques avoids oscillations associated with piece-wise linear cost functions. Numerical results indicate that the proposed approach is fast and efficient in dealing with numerous power system constraints. >

Abstract: Sensor networks pose a number of challenging conceptual and optimization problems such as location, deployment, and tracking. One of the fundamental problems in sensor networks is the calculation of the coverage. In Meguerdichian et al. (2001), it is assumed that the sensor has uniform sensing ability. We provide efficient distributed algorithms to optimally solve the best-coverage problem raised in the above-mentioned article. In addition, we consider a more general sensing model: the sensing ability diminishes as the distance increases. As energy conservation is a major concern in wireless (or sensor) networks, we also consider how to find an optimum best-coverage-path with the least energy consumption and how to find an optimum best-coverage-path that travels a small distance. In addition, we justify the correctness of the method proposed above that uses the Delaunay triangulation to solve the best coverage problem and show that the search space of the best coverage problem can be confined to the relative neighborhood graph, which can be constructed locally.

Abstract: The concept of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is emerging as an attractive solution for controlling the grid-connected inverter when the renewable energy has a high penetration level into the grid. This paper focuses on the small-signal modeling and parameters design of the power loop of the VSG, and points out that the bandwidth of the power loop should be far less than twice the line frequency for the purpose of avoiding the VSG output voltage to be severely distorted. Consequently, the line-frequency-averaged small-signal model of the VSG is derived for system analysis and parameters design. Based on the model, the decoupling conditions between the active power loops (APLs) and the reactive power loops (RPLs) of the VSG are given. Finally, a step-by-step parameters design method is proposed to facilitate the design of the control parameters of the VSG. A 10-kVA prototype is built and tested in the laboratory, and the experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis and the proposed parameters design method.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explicate the impact of an 8-week science apprenticeship program on a group of high-ability secondary students' understandings of the nature of science and scientific inquiry. Ten volunteers (Grades 10–11) completed a modified version of the Views of Nature of Science, Form B both before and after their apprenticeship to assess their conceptions of key aspects of the nature of science and scientific inquiry. Semistructured exit interviews provided an opportunity for students to describe the nature of their apprenticeship experiences and elaborate on their written questionnaire responses. Semistructured exit interviews were also conducted with the scientists who served as mentors for each of the science apprentices. For the most part, students held conceptions about the nature of science and scientific inquiry that were inconsistent with those described in current reforms. Participating science mentors held strong convictions that their apprentices had learned much about the scientific enterprise in the course of doing the science in their apprenticeship. Although most students did appear to gain knowledge about the processes of scientific inquiry, their conceptions about key aspects of the nature of science remained virtually unchanged. Epistemic demand and reflection appeared to be crucial components in the single case where a participant experienced substantial gains in her understandings of the nature of science and inquiry. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: With rapid electrification of transportation, it is becoming increasingly important to have a comprehensive understanding of criteria used in motor selection. This paper presents the design and comparative evaluation for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with distributed winding and concentrated winding, induction motor (IM), and switched reluctance motor (SRM) for an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application. A fast finite element analysis (FEA) modeling approach is addressed for IM design. To account for highly nonlinear motor parameters and achieve high motor efficiency, optimal current trajectories are obtained by extensive mapping for IPMSMs and IM. Optimal turn- on and turn- off angles with current chopping control and angular position control are found for SRM. Additional comparison including noise vibration and harshness (NVH) is also highlighted. Simulation and analytical results show that each motor topology demonstrates its own unique characteristic for EVs/HEVs. Each motor’s highest efficiency region is located at different torque-speed regions for the criteria defined. Stator geometry, pole/slot combination, and control strategy differentiate NVH performance.
