Abstract: Recently, in answer to a question of Kolmogorov, G.D. Makarov obtained best-possible bounds for the distribution function of the sumX+Y of two random variables,X andY, whose individual distribution functions,FX andFY, are fixed. We show that these bounds follow directly from an inequality which has been known for some time. The techniques we employ, which are based on copulas and their properties, yield an insightful proof of the fact that these bounds are best-possible, settle the question of equality, and are computationally manageable. Furthermore, they extend to binary operations other than addition and to higher dimensions.

Abstract: Proton magnetic resonance data and conformational calculations of a series of model compounds containing a NH-CαH group substituted as in peptides have been used to generate a proton–proton coupling constant–dihedral angle relation for the peptide unit. For those substances used in which the dihedral angle about the N-Cα bond is not fixed, the angle distribution was calculated from conformational theory. Using eight examples in which the number of theoretical assumptions were least, the best values of the coefficients A, B, and C in the expression J(θ) = Acos2θ + B cosθ + Csin2θ were found by a least-squares procedure to be 7.9, −1.55, and 1.35, respectively. This relation gives reasonable values for the dihedral angles ϕ in cyclic oligopeptide structures for which the availability of both NMR data and other structural information allow comparison. When applied to N-acetylamino acid N-methylamides having side chains extending beyond Cβ, however, agreement with the calculated conformational distribution was found for Leu, Met, and Trp, but observed values of J were larger than expected for Val, He, Phe, and Tyr, These disagreements are considered to be the result of interactions not yet taken into account in the usual conformational calculations.

Abstract: The heat-transfer problems of combined free and forced convection by a fully developed laminar flow in a vertical channel of constant axial wall temperature gradient with or without heat generations are approached by a new method. By introducing a complex function which is directly related to the velocity and temperature fields, the coupled momentum and energy equations are readily combinable to a Helmholtz wave equation in the complex domain. This greatly reduces the complexities of the problems. For illustrations, the cases of flows between parallel plates and in a rectangular channel are treated. Results show that this method is more direct and powerful than those of previous investigations. (auth)

Abstract: The spectrum usage by a secondary user often happens in a certain geographical region and in a certain time interval, and the requests often come in an online fashion. Considering the selfish behaviors of primary users and secondary users, it is imperative to design online double spectrum auction methods. The most significant challenge is how to make the online double auction economic-robust (truthful in particular). Unfortunately, existing designs either do not consider the online requests or become untruthful when applied to scenarios when both primary users and secondary users could be selfish. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing TODA, a general framework for truthful online double auction for spectrum allocation. We assume that there is a central auctioneer, and the arrivals of secondary users' requests follow Poisson distribution. Upon receiving online spectrum requests, the central auctioneer will decide immediately which secondary and primary users will win the auction, and match winning primary users and secondary users, as well as decide how much secondary users should pay and primary users should get. To preempt existing spectrum usage is not allowed. We study the case in which the conflict graph of secondary users is a complete graph, which occurs in the urban area where the distribution of the secondary users is very dense. In this case, we design strategyproof (truthful) mechanisms for both the primary users and secondary users. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to design truthful online double auction mechanisms for spectrum allocation. Our simulation results show that the expected social efficiency ratio of our mechanism is always above 80% compared with the off-line VCG mechanism and the spectrum utilization ratio is around 70% when the system is highly loaded.
