Abstract: Vestibular neuritis (VN) mostly involves the superior portion of the vestibular nerve and labyrinth This study aimed to describe the clinical features of VN involving the inferior vestibular labyrinth and its afferents only Of the 703 patients with a diagnosis of VN or labyrinthitis at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from 2004 to 2010, we retrospectively recruited 9 patients (6 women, age range 15-75) with a diagnosis of isolated inferior VN Diagnosis of isolated inferior VN was based on torsional downbeating spontaneous nystagmus, abnormal head-impulse test (HIT) for the posterior semicircular canal (PC), and abnormal cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) in the presence of normally functioning horizontal and anterior semicircular canals, as determined by normal HIT and bithermal caloric tests All patients presented with acute vertigo with nausea, vomiting, and imbalance Three patients also had tinnitus and hearing loss in the involved side The rotation axis of torsional downbeating spontaneous nystagmus was best aligned with that of the involved PC HIT was also positive only for the involved PC Cervical VEMP was abnormal in seven patients, and ocular VEMP was normal in all four patients tested Ocular torsion and subjective visual vertical tests were mostly within the normal range Since isolated inferior VN lacks the typical findings of much more prevalent superior VN, it may be mistaken for a central vestibular disorder Recognition of this rare disorder may help avoid unnecessary workups in patients with acute vestibulopathy

Abstract: Results are presented from a search for new physics in the final state containing a photon and missing transverse energy. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV by the CMS experiment. The observed event yield agrees with standard-model expectations for photon plus missing transverse energy events. Using models for production of dark-matter particles (chi), we set 90% confidence level (CL) upper limits of 13.6--15.4 femtobarns on chi production in the photon plus missing transverse energy state. These provide the most sensitive upper limits for spin-dependent chi-nucleon scattering for chi masses between 1 and 100 GeV. For spin-independent contributions, the present limits are extended to chi masses below 3.5 GeV. For models with 3--6 large extra dimensions, our data exclude extra-dimensional Planck scales between 1.65 and 1.71 TeV at 95% CL.

Abstract: Ganoderma lucidum, a medicinal white-rot basidiomycete, produces many laccase isozymes in liquid culture. Three laccase isozymes (GaLc 1, 2, 3) have been purified 32.4-fold from the crude enzyme protein through anion exchange chromatography, preparative gel electrophoresis, and electroelution. Their estimated molecular weights are 65–68 kDa, and they contain 7–10% N-linked carbohydrates. The three isozymes have identical N-terminal amino acid sequences: G-I-G-P-T. The optimum pH and temperature both for each isozyme singly and the isozyme mixture are pH 3.5 and 20°C, respectively. One isozyme (GaLc 3) is quite stable at pH 4.0–10.0, and shows good stability when incubated at temperatures lower than 40°C. The Km values of GaLc 3 for o-tolidine and 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylthiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) are 401.6 µM and 3.7 µM respectively, and the Vmax of GaLc 3 for these substrates is 0.0198 OD min–1unit–1 and 0.0142 OD min–1unit–1, respectively.

Abstract: We demonstrate a new silica (SiO2) nanoparticle/polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP)-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nonwoven composite separator for a lithium-ion battery as a promising alternative to a commercialized polyethylene (PE) separator. A distinctive feature of the nonwoven composite separator is its porous structure, i.e. well-connected interstitial voids formed between close-packed SiO2 nanoparticles interconnected by PVdF-HFP binders. More notably, this unusual porous structure of the nonwoven composite separator can be tuned by controlling the SiO2 particle size (herein, 40 nm and 530 nm SiO2 powders are exploited). Such morphological variation of the nonwoven composite separator has a crucial influence on separator properties such as porosity, electrolyte wettability, and ionic conductivity. The PET nonwoven is employed as a physical support to prevent thermal shrinkage of the nonwoven composite separator. Based on this understanding of the separator characteristics, the effects of the SiO2 particle size-dependent, tunable porous structure of nonwoven composite separators on the electrochemical performance of cells are investigated. In comparison to a nonwoven composite separator containing 530 nm SiO2 particles as well as the conventional PE separator, the nonwoven composite separator incorporating 40 nm SiO2 particles provides superior cell performance owing to facile ion transport and retarded growth of cell impedance during cycling.
