Abstract: Background. Behcet’s disease (BD) is an autoimmune disease of systemic vasculitis with an unclear pathogenesis. Although western medicines remain the mainstay interventions, effectiveness and safety are significant challenges. Complementary and alternative medicine, including herbal medicine, are gaining more attention. Chinese medicine decoctions, which have been used for centuries, are the most common form of traditional therapies. Objective. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Chinese medicine decoctions in the treatment of BD. Methods. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for BD treatment with Chinese medicine decoctions were searched in six electronic databases until March 2021. Primary outcomes were total effective rate, recovery rate, and recurrence rate. Secondary outcomes were clinical feature scores (oral ulcers, eye lesions, genital ulcers, skin lesions, arthropathies, fever, and pathergy reactions) and laboratory index levels (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and immunoglobulin A). The risk of bias was assessed with the Cochrane Handbook, and a meta-analysis was performed with RevMan 5.4.1. Results. Sixteen RCTs with 924 patients were included in the review. The meta-analysis indicated that Chinese medicine decoctions were effective for BD when compared with control groups for all the primary outcomes and 7/10 of the secondary outcomes. Adverse events were reported in 11 of the 16 RCTs, with the Chinese medicine decoctions possibly having fewer adverse events than western drugs. This review included a range of classical prescriptions. An additional meta-analysis of modified Gancao Xiexin Decoction for BD treatment was conducted. Gancao Xiexin decoction is also discussed as a representative prescription, as well as high-frequency herbs, and warrants further exploration for individualized medicine and pharmacology. Conclusion. Chinese medicine decoctions have the potential to be effective and safe for treating BD. However, additional well-designed RCTs are needed to confirm the findings because of the unsatisfactory quality of the included studies.

Abstract: A novel Mn2+-doped hollow Mn-HMAS aluminosilica (Mn-HMAS) nanoparticle for simultaneous - weighted magnetic resonance imaging and drug delivery was reported. The magnetic resonance tests showed that the Mn-HMAS nanoparticles display an excellent - weighted magnetic resonance imaging effect with a high relaxivity (r1) of 8.8 mM-1S-1. The MTT assays showed that the Mn-HMAS-DOX nanoparticles possess a better tumour cell inhibition effect than DOX. In addition, the Mn-HMAS nanoparticles also exhibit good stability and noncytotoxicity. These results demonstrated that the Mn-HMAS nanoparticles can be applied for the loading and delivery of various drugs in medicine.

Abstract: The de novo formation of ectopic bone marrow was induced using 1.2-mm-thin polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds biomodified with several different biomaterials. In vivo investigations of de novo bone and bone marrow formation indicated that subcutaneous implantation of PCL scaffolds coated with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) plus Matrigel, hydroxyapatite (HA), or StemRegenin 1 (SR1) improved formation of bone and hematopoietic bone marrow as determined by microcomputed tomography, and histological and hematopoietic characterizations. Our study provides evidence that thin PCL scaffolds biomodified with Matrigel, HA, and SR1 mimic the environments of real bone and bone marrow, thereby enhancing the de novo ectopic bone marrow formation induced by rhBMP-2. This ectopic bone marrow model will serve as a unique and essential tool for basic research and for clinical applications of postnatal tissue engineering and organ regeneration.

Abstract: As one of the major active components of Qizhiweitong (QZWT) prescription, corydalis alkaloid (CA) has been reported to have noticeable effect of anti-inflammation in pharmacological studies. However, the anti-inflammatory function and potential mechanism of CA in anti-inflammation remain to be clarified. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammation efficacy and potential mechanism of CA in anti-inflammation by metabonomic approach coupled with related gene analyzes in vivo and in vitro. Mice acute inflammation was induced by subcutaneous injection of formalin in hind paws, and evaluated the anti-inflammatory effect of CA via detecting the index of paw edema. The results indicated that CA has an anti-inflammatory effect on mice through alleviating the paw edema significantly. Moreover, metabolic profiling was performed by high performance liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (HPLC-QTOF-MS) combined with multivariate data analysis, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Thirteen metabolic targets (including lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC), choline, arachidonic acid, phosphodimethylethanolamine) and related pathways of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory and arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism were identified, Meanwhile, the relevant target genes, like iNOS, NF-κB, TNF-α, were detected and verified in vitro. The results indicated that CA has a good pharmacological effect of anti-inflammation through regulating multiple disordered targets and metabolic networks, which provides a theoretical basis for further research on CA. Furthermore, there is a great potential for the development of CA to be a new anti-inflammatory drug with high effective activities, little side effects and weak drug resistance.
