Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve an essential role in regulating immunological functions. However, their impact on Henoch-Schonlein purpura nephritis (HSPN), has remained elusive. The present study determined the expression of lncRNAs and mRNAs in the peripheral blood of 6 children with HSPN and recruited 4 healthy children for comparative study. High-throughput sequencing revealed outstanding differences in lncRNA and mRNA expression, which were verified through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses were used to investigate the associated biological functions and possible mechanisms of lncRNAs and mRNAs in HSPN. A total of 820 differentially expressed lncRNAs between the two groups were identified, of which 34 were upregulated and 786 were downregulated. Simultaneously, a total of 3,557 mRNAs were also identified to be differentially expressed, of which 1,232 were upregulated and 2,325 were downregulated. The results revealed that the expression of lncRNAs including ENST00000378432, ENST00000571370, uc001kfc.1 and uc010qna.2 was decreased in HSPN patients compared with that in healthy controls. These lncRNAs were associated with the p53 signaling pathway and apoptosis-associated genes (AKT2, tumor protein 53, phosphatase and tensin homolog and FAS). Further studies of those lncRNAs will be performed to elucidate their functions in apoptosis. Abstract: Cauda Cervi has been used as a nourishing invigorant in China for a long time. As recorded, the origins of Cauda Cervi are the dried tails of Cervus elaphus Linnaeus and Cervus nippon Temminck. In addition, Cervus albirostris Przewalski and Cervus unicolor Kerr are also used in some regions. Hair grows periodically and has high biological stability, which allows it to be used as specific markers for certain species. In order to differentiate four species of Cauda Cervi, microscopic characteristics of remnant hair were observed. Digital parameters such as the diameter of the hair shaft, medulla index and vein distance of the hair cuticle were compiled. It was shown that the method is convenient and feasible.

Abstract: This study aimed to compare the effect of excess iodine and herbs with excess iodine on treating iodine deficiency-induced goiter from the perspective of oxidative stress and to measure selenium values in Chinese herbs. One hundred twenty 4-week-old Wistar rats were selected and randomly divided into four groups after inducing iodine-deficiency goiter: normal control group (NC), model control group (MC), iodine excess group (IE), and herbs with iodine excess group (HIE). The activities of oxidative enzymes and levels of oxidative products were measured using biochemical tests. The expression of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) in the thyroid was detected by immunohistochemistry and the expression of peroxiredoxin 5 (PRDX5) by the Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Selenium values in iodine-excessive herbs were measured by hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The herbs with iodine excess were tested to contain rich selenium. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and PRDX5 increased markedly, and the values of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-HNE decreased significantly in the HIE group. In conclusion, compared with excess iodine, herbs with excess iodine damaged thyroid follicular cells less, which may be related to the increase of antioxidant capacity and rich selenium values in iodine-excessive herbs.
