Abstract: Mixing simple additives into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) dispersions can greatly enhance the thermoelectric properties of the cast films with little manufacturing cost, but design rules for many of these additives have yet to emerge We show that controlling stoichiometry in ionic liquid (IL) additives can decouple morphological and electronic modifications to PEDOT:PSS and enhance its power factor by over 2 orders of magnitude Blending IL additives with a 1:1 stoichiometry between cationic imidazolium (Im+) derivatives and anionic bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide (TFSI–) groups into PEDOT:PSS dispersions raised the film conductivity to ∼1000 S/cm The Seebeck coefficient, which gives insight into the electronic structure as well as thermoelectric performance, remained unchanged This behavior mimics that of popular high-boiling solvent additives such as dimethyl sulfoxide and ethylene glycol, which restructure the film morphology to enhance carrier mobility B

Abstract: cDNA fragments encoding a representative region of the L-type calcium channel alpha-1 subunit of rabbit intestine smooth muscle were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The nucleotide sequences of these intestine clones shared a high similarity with aorta, lung and heart calcium channels. However, in the extracellular loop between the third and fourth segments of domain IV and in the transmembrane IVS3 segment itself, we observed primary sequence variations corresponding to alternative splicing phenomenons. Since structural differences of L-type calcium channel alpha-1 subunits could result in functional variations, the respective expression frequency of these isoforms was determined in various tissues and species, and in the embryonic A7r5 cell line. The ontogeny of these splicing events was also examined from tissues of different ages. From this quantitative study, carried out by PCR of reverse-transcribed mRNA, it clearly appears that the observed splicing processes in the IVS3-IVS4 region are not only tissue-dependent but also regulated during development.

Abstract: The transcriptional regulator Yin Yang 1 (YY1) controls many aspects of cell behavior and is essential for development. We analyzed the fate of YY1 during apoptosis and studied the functional consequences. We observed that this factor is rapidly translocated into the cell nucleus in response to various apoptotic stimuli, including activation of Fas, stimulation by tumor necrosis factor, and staurosporine and etoposide treatment. Furthermore, YY1 is cleaved by caspases in vitro and in vivo at two distinct sites, IATD12G and DDSD119G, resulting in the deletion of the first 119 amino acids early in the apoptotic process. This activity generates an N-terminally truncated YY1 fragment (YY1Δ119) that has lost its transactivation domain but retains its DNA binding domain. Indeed, YY1Δ119 is no longer able to stimulate gene transcription but interacts with DNA. YY1Δ119 but not the wild-type protein or the caspase-resistant mutant YY1D12A/D119A enhances Fas-induced apoptosis, suggesting that YY1 is involved in a positive feedback loop during apoptosis. Our findings provide evidence for a new mode of regulation of YY1 and define a novel aspect of the involvement of YY1 in the apoptotic process.

Abstract: A family of anionomeric segmented polyurethane–ureas made from α-ω dimethylol-terminated perfluoropolyethers (Mn = 1000–2000), isophorone diisocyanate, dimethylol propionic acid, and ethylenediamine was obtained in form of stable aqueous dispersions. The dispersions were characterized by viscometry and dynamic laser light scattering. The main compositive parameters explored were the amount of COOH groups and the length of the fluorinated macromer. The new polyurethane–ureas were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis obtaining information on modulus, thermal transition, and phase segregation. Surface properties and chemical resistance were estimated through measurements of static contact angles and spot tests with different solvents. Although surface hydrophobicity was not affected by composition, water-sorption behavior was sensitive to the ionic character (COOH level) of the polymer. Diffusion and permeability coefficients of polymer films, having different carboxyl contents, were estimated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 93: 136–144, 2004

Abstract: Polymers which can be used in p-type materials for organic electronic devices and photovoltaic cells. Compounds, monomers, dimers, trimers, and polymers comprising formula (I); Good photovoltaic efficiency and lifetime can be achieved. The R group can provide solubility, environmental stability, and fine tuning of spectroscopic and/or electronic properties. Different polymer microstructures can be prepared which encourage multiple band gaps and broad and strong absorptions. The carbonyl can interact with adjacent thiophene rings to provide backbone with rigidity, induce planarity, and reduce and/or eliminate intramolecular chain twisting defects. Polymers comprising benzodithiophene and/or benzothiadiazole structures can show particularly high performance.
