Abstract: Lithium-ion batteries decay every time as it is used. Aging-induced degradation is unlikely to be eliminated. The aging mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries are manifold and complicated which are strongly linked to many interactive factors, such as battery types, electrochemical reaction stages, and operating conditions. In this paper, we systematically summarize mechanisms and diagnosis of lithium-ion battery aging. Regarding the aging mechanism, effects of different internal side reactions on lithium-ion battery degradation are discussed based on the anode, cathode, and other battery structures. The influence of different external factors on the aging mechanism is explained, in which temperature can exert the greatest impact compared to other external factors. As for aging diagnosis, three widely-used methods are discussed: disassembly-based post-mortem analysis, curve-based analysis, and model-based analysis. Generally, the post-mortem analysis is employed for cross-validation while the curve-based analysis and the model-based analysis provide quantitative analysis. The challenges in the use of quantitative diagnosis and on-board diagnosis on battery aging are also discussed, based on which insights are provided for developing online battery aging diagnosis and battery health management in the next generation of intelligent battery management systems (BMSs).

Abstract: We present age estimates for the newly discovered, very r-process-enhanced metal-poor star HE 1523-0901 ([Fe/H] = -2.95) based on the radioactive decay of Th and U. The bright (V = 11.1) giant was found among a sample of bright metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. From an abundance analysis of a high-resolution (R = 75,000) VLT/UVES spectrum, we find HE 1523-0901 to be strongly overabundant in r-process elements ([r/Fe] = 1.8). The abundances of heavy neutron-capture elements (Z > 56) measured in HE 1523-0901 match the scaled solar r-process pattern extremely well. We detect the strongest optical U line at 3859.57 A. For the first time, we are able to employ several different chronometers, such as the U/Th, U/Ir, Th/Eu, and Th/Os ratios to measure the age of a star. The weighted average age of HE 1523-0901 is 13.2 Gyr. Several sources of uncertainties are assessed in detail.

Abstract: We measure the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) in the galaxy clustering pattern at the highest redshift achieved to date, z= 0.6, using the distribution of N= 132 509 emission-line galaxies in the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We quantify BAOs using three statistics: the galaxy correlation function, power spectrum and the band-filtered estimator introduced by Xu et al. The results are mutually consistent, corresponding to a 4.0 per cent measurement of the cosmic distance–redshift relation at z= 0.6 [in terms of the acoustic parameter ‘A(z)’ introduced by Eisenstein et al., we find A(z= 0.6) = 0.452 ± 0.018]. Both BAOs and power spectrum shape information contribute towards these constraints. The statistical significance of the detection of the acoustic peak in the correlation function, relative to a wiggle-free model, is 3.2σ. The ratios of our distance measurements to those obtained using BAOs in the distribution of luminous red galaxies at redshifts z= 0.2 and 0.35 are consistent with a flat Λ cold dark matter model that also provides a good fit to the pattern of observed fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation. The addition of the current WiggleZ data results in a ≈30 per cent improvement in the measurement accuracy of a constant equation of state, w, using BAO data alone. Based solely on geometric BAO distance ratios, accelerating expansion (w < −1/3) is required with a probability of 99.8 per cent, providing a consistency check of conclusions based on supernovae observations. Further improvements in cosmological constraints will result when the WiggleZ survey data set is complete.

Abstract: This article reports the findings of research into the functioning of companies' and organisations' internal labour markets. Four case studies of Australian and United Kingdom public and private sector organisations have been undertaken with two principal aims: to elucidate the challenges and barriers to the employment of older workers, and to demonstrate the benefits to business and to older workers of age-aware human resource management policies. In each of the case-study organisations, age-related assumptions affected the management of knowledge and skills and the ways in which older and younger workers were employed. Managing age relations in organisations requires an understanding of the ways in which workers of different ages are perceived and how these associate with sub-optimal deployment. The article concludes by suggesting that policies directed at older workers alone will ignore the age and age-group dynamics that pervade workplaces. To promote the better deployment of younger and older individuals in rapidly transforming organisations, there is a need for policy makers, employers and employees to be attentive to the age-group relationships that currently inform workplace practices. Organisations cannot ignore these age dynamics, but should adopt ‘age aware’ rather than ‘age free’ practices. The recommended human-resources approach would attend to individuals' capabilities and not stereotype them by age.

Abstract: Using a statistically rigorous analysis method, we place limits on the existence of an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background using pulsar timing observations. We consider backgrounds whose characteristic strain spectra may be described as a power-law dependence with frequency. Such backgrounds include an astrophysical background produced by coalescing supermassive black-hole binary systems and cosmological backgrounds due to relic gravitational waves and cosmic strings. Using the best available data, we obtain an upper limit on the energy density per unit logarithmic frequency interval of \Omega^{\rm SMBH}_g(1/8yr) h^2 <= 1.9 x 10^{-8} for an astrophysical background which is five times more stringent than the earlier Kaspi et al. (1994) limit of 1.1 x 10^{-7}. We also provide limits on a background due to relic gravitational waves and cosmic strings of \Omega^{\rm relic}_g(1/8yr) h^2 <= 2.0 x 10^{-8} and \Omega^{\rm cs}_g(1/8yr) h^2 <= 1.9 x 10^{-8} respectively. All of the quoted upper limits correspond to a 0.1% false alarm rate together with a 95% detection rate. We discuss the physical implications of these results and highlight the future possibilities of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array project. We find that our current results can 1) constrain the merger rate of supermassive binary black hole systems at high red shift, 2) rule out some relationships between the black hole mass and the galactic halo mass, 3) constrain the rate of expansion in the inflationary era and 4) provide an upper bound on the dimensionless tension of a cosmic string background.
