Abstract: Emissary veins connect the extracranial venous system with the intracranial venous sinuses. These include, but are not limited to, the posterior condyloid, mastoid, occipital, and parietal emissary veins. A review of the literature for the anatomy, embryology, pathology, and surgery of the intracranial emissary veins was performed. Detailed descriptions of these venous structures are lacking in the literature, and, to the authors', knowledge, this is the first detailed review to discuss the anatomy, pathology, anomalies, and clinical effects of the cranial emissary veins. Our hope is that such data will be useful to the neurosurgeon during surgery in the vicinity of the emissary veins.

Abstract: Scabies is an ectoparasitic, highly contagious skin disease caused by a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. The insecticides ivermectin and permethrin are commonly used for treatment of scabies. This study aimed at comparing the efficacy of oral ivermectin with topical permethrin in treating scabies. Two hundred and forty-two patients with scabies attending the dermatology outpatient department of Sina Hospital, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences were admitted. Patients were divided into two groups randomly. The first group and their family contacts received 5% permethrin cream and the other received oral ivermectin. Treatment was evaluated at intervals of 2 and 4 weeks. A single dose of ivermectin provided a cure rate of 85.9% at a 2-week interval, which increased to 100% after crossing over to the permethrin group at a 4-week interval. Twice application of permethrin with a 1-week interval was effective in 92.5% of patients, which increased to 94.2% after crossing over to the ivermectin group at a 4-week interval. Permethrin-treated patients recovered earlier. Twice application of permethrin with a 1-week interval is superior to a single dose of ivermectin. The temporal dissociation in clinical response suggests that ivermectin may not be effective against all the stages in the life cycle of the parasite.

Abstract: In this study to further improve surface characteristics of tissue engineering scaffolds, a novel composite based on chitosan–gelatin/nanohydroxyapatite–polyaniline (CS-Gel/nHA-PANI) was prepared by blending the synthesized nHA and PANI with chitosan and gelatin solution followed by lyophilization technique. The prepared composite scaffold was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The effects of nHA and PANI on the physicochemical properties of the scaffold including swelling ratio, density, biodegradation, biomineralization, and mechanical behavior were investigated. The composite scaffold was highly porous with the mean pore size of 200 μm. Compared with CS-Gel and CS-Gel/nHA scaffolds, the CS-Gel/nHA-PANI scaffold exhibited lower degradation rate and higher biomineralization and mechanical strength.
