Abstract: In recent years there has been an increased interest in managing data that does not conform to traditional data models, like the relational or object oriented model. The reasons for this non-conformance are diverse. On the one hand, data may not conform to such models at the physical level: it may be stored in data exchange formats, fetched from the Web, or stored as structured files. One the other hand, it may not conform at the logical level: data may have missing attributes, some attributes may be of different types in different data items, there may be heterogeneous collections, or the schema may be too complex or changes too often. The term semistructured data has been used to refer to such data. The semistructured data model consists of an edge-labeled graph, in which nodes correspond to objects and edges to attributes or values. Figure 1 illustrates a semistructured database providing information about a city.

Abstract: In this paper, we examine one channel through which the trade regime might affect growth in the long run. We model endogenous technological progress that results from profit maximizing investments by far-sighted entrepreneurs. Productivity in the research lab depends upon the "stock of knowledge capital", a variable reflecting the state of scientific, engineering and industrial know-how in the local economy. We argue that local knowledge capital is likely to vary positively with the extent of contact between domestic agents and their counterparts in the international research and business communities, and that the number of such contacts increases with the level of commercial exchange. We derive the implications of this for the relationship between trade and growth.

Abstract: The organizing principles that govern the layout of human object-related areas are largely unknown. Here we propose a new organizing principle in which object representations are arranged according to a central versus peripheral visual field bias. The proposal is based on the finding that building-related regions overlap periphery-biased visual field representations, whereas face-related regions are associated with center-biased representations. Furthermore, the eccentricity maps encompass essentially the entire extent of object-related occipito-temporal cortex, indicating that most object representations are organized with respect to retinal eccentricity. A control experiment ruled out the possibility that the results are due exclusively to unequal feature distribution in these images. We hypothesize that brain regions representing object categories that rely on detailed central scrutiny (such as faces) are more strongly associated with processing of central information, compared to representations of objects that may be recognized by more peripheral information (such as buildings or scenes).
