TL;DR: A delay-dependent criterion for determining the stability of systems with time-varying delays is obtained and this criterion is used to derive an efficient stabilizing state-feedback design method for systems with parameter uncertainty, of either the polytopic or the norm-bounded types.
Abstract: In this paper, we combine a new approach for linear time delay systems based on a descriptor representation with a recent result on bounding of cross products of vectors. A delay-dependent criterion for determining the stability of systems with time-varying delays is obtained. This criterion is used to derive an efficient stabilizing state-feedback design method for systems with parameter uncertainty, of either the polytopic or the norm-bounded types.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed that self-control involves making decisions and behaving in a manner consistent with high-level versus low-level construals of a situation, and they found that activation of high level construal (which capture global, superordinate, primary features of an event) should lead to greater self control than activation of low level (local, subordinate, secondary features).
Abstract: The authors propose that self-control involves making decisions and behaving in a manner consistent with high-level versus low-level construals of a situation. Activation of high-level construals (which capture global, superordinate, primary features of an event) should lead to greater self-control than activation of low-level construals (which capture local, subordinate, secondary features). In 6 experiments using 3 different techniques, the authors manipulated construal levels and assessed their effects on self-control and underlying psychological processes. High-level construals led to decreased preferences for immediate over delayed outcomes, greater physical endurance, stronger intentions to exert selfcontrol, and less positive evaluations of temptations that undermine self-control. These results support a construal-level analysis of self-control.

TL;DR: It is shown that < or =25% of DSBs require ATM signaling for repair, and this percentage correlates with increased chromatin but not damage complexity, which suggests that the importance of ATM signalling for DSB repair increases as the heterochromatic component of a genome expands.

TL;DR: The Mediterranean Intensive Oxidant Study, performed in the summer of 2001, uncovered air pollution layers from the surface to an altitude of 15 kilometers, causing air pollution standards to be exceeded throughout the region.
Abstract: The Mediterranean Intensive Oxidant Study, performed in the summer of 2001, uncovered air pollution layers from the surface to an altitude of 15 kilometers. In the boundary layer, air pollution standards are exceeded throughout the region, caused by West and East European pollution from the north. Aerosol particles also reduce solar radiation penetration to the surface, which can suppress precipitation. In the middle troposphere, Asian and to a lesser extent North American pollution is transported from the west. Additional Asian pollution from the east, transported from the monsoon in the upper troposphere, crosses the Mediterranean tropopause, which pollutes the lower stratosphere at middle latitudes.

TL;DR: It is reported here that in the presence of low concentrations of the sTNF-Rs, effects of TNF whose induction depend on prolonged treatment with this cytokine are augmented, reflecting an attenuation by the sST NF-Rs of spontaneous TNF activity decay.
Abstract: The receptors for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) exist in cell-associated as well as soluble forms, both binding specifically to TNF. Since the soluble forms of TNF receptors (sTNF-Rs) can compete with the cell-associated TNF receptors for TNF, it was suggested that they function as inhibitors of TNF activity; at high concentrations, the sTNF-Rs indeed inhibit TNF effects. However, we report here that in the presence of low concentrations of the sTNF-Rs, effects of TNF whose induction depend on prolonged treatment with this cytokine are augmented, reflecting an attenuation by the sTNF-Rs of spontaneous TNF activity decay. Evidence that this stabilization of TNF activity by the sTNF-Rs follows from stabilization of TNF structure within the complexes that TNF forms with the sTNF-Rs is presented here, suggesting that the sTNF-Rs can affect TNF activity not only by interfering with its binding to cells but also by stabilizing its structure and preserving its activity, thus augmenting some of its effects.
