TL;DR: Comparison studies show that these findings are more related to the user experience and user behaviour than usability and user interaction with the device.
Abstract: abstract The phenomena a usability test in the field reveals are different from those uncovered in a classical usability test conducted in a laboratory setting. Comparison studies show that these findings are more related to the user experience and user behaviour than usability and user interaction with the device. Testing in the field is a necessary part of the product development cycle, but the question is what and how to test. Duplicating a laboratory usability test method in the field may not make sense in many cases because the required extra effort does not result in comparable added value, as far as understanding user interaction. Studying user behaviour, on the other hand, requires a less controlled test setting.

23 Jun 2003TL;DR: Antonio Damasio's Somatic Marker Hypothesis is suggested to be taken as a starting point when the authors consider how pleasant interfaces do get users to use a service.
Abstract: There is a general growing emphasis on aesthetics in the human-computer interaction field (HCI). I suggest Antonio Damasio's Somatic Marker Hypothesis to be taken as a starting point when we consider how pleasant interfaces do get users to use a service. Damasio describes an automated mechanism where previous experiences leave marks about choices we have made, and how these marks affect our decision-making. I also suggest applying Richard Shusterman's concept of Somaesthetics in the discussions about aesthetic experiences. I suggest that these two disciplines could be included in the further work on aesthetics in the human-computer interactions area.

28 Jan 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a procedure for creating a service profile dependent on the user's selection for a subscription in a telecommunication network is described, where each number is associated with an optional service profile.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a procedure for creating a service profile dependent on the user's selection for a subscription in a telecommunication network. The invention makes it possible to use a subscription in a telecommunication network with several different subscriber numbers, each number being associated with an optional service profile dependent on the user's selection.

20 Feb 1997TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a system and a method to transmit data to a company's data system by a mobile phone connected to a mobile communications network, and receive an acknowledgement to the same mobile phone from the company data system.
Abstract: The invention relates to a system and a method to transmit data to a company's data system (23) by a mobile phone (20) connected to a mobile communications network, and receive an acknowledgement to the same mobile phone from the company's data system. Characteristic to the invention is that a preset target number dialed by a mobile phone is directed to an intelligent network centre (21), that the target number is decoded into data, which is transmitted to a company's data system during the connection. The intelligent network centre uses the caller's number identifying to check whether the caller is entitled to use the service, and to check to which information system of which company the data has been sent. The intelligent network centre transmits preferably by using transmits a telecommunications network signalling the target number, caller's number and address of the company's to a voice server (22), which is a computer capable also to identify telephone numbers and formulate voice messages. The voice server converts the target number into data and transmits the data and the caller's number to the company's data system using a data network, preferably a data network based on TCP/IP protocol. The company's data system stores the data in the data system and formulates a return message, which includes an acknowldedgement of the received data and further a possible additional information, and transmits it to the voice server using the data network. The voice server transmits using the mobile communications network the return message either as a GSM short message (text message) or as a voice message to the mobile station, which transmitted the data code, or as a pager message to the desired pager device.

17 Dec 1996TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a new procedure and system for call control and to meet a need observed recently in the telecommunication business for calls rated below normal tariffs especially between certain predeterminable subscriptions.
Abstract: The object of the present invention is to achieve in the telephone network a new type of procedure and system for call control and to meet a need observed recently in the telecommunication business for calls rated below normal tariffs especially between certain predeterminable subscriptions. The system of the invention does not require any substantial system changes in the telephone network. In addition, calls between predetermined subscriptions can now be rated according to a special tariff and the changes can be easily and flexibly included in the normal invoicing. When the number of subscriptions per customer is limited to two, the common call number for all customers is the same, e.g. 020100. When this number is dialled, the call is directed to the wired network subscription specified in the subscriber number pair, which is stored in a database, when the call is made from a mobile station, and vice versa. When the number of subscriptions connected to the system by a customer is greater than two the common call number comprises a prefix part which is the same for all customers and on the basis of which the telephone network exchange recognizes the service call of intelligent network calls and specially rated calls, and a suffix part which is an integer and which, via the intelligent network, determines the desired individual subscription among the subscriptions selected to be included in the system by the customer.
