TL;DR: Numerical results show the merits of the proposed approach, and in particular that the use of PIM increases the system throughput by at least 40%, without requiring any additional energy consumption.
Abstract: This paper investigates the use of a Passive Intelligent Mirrors (PIM) to operate a multi-user MISO downlink communication. The transmit powers and the mirror reflection coefficients are designed for sum-rate maximization subject to individual QoS guarantees to the mobile users. The resulting problem is non-convex, and is tackled by combining alternating maximization with the majorization-minimization method. Numerical results show the merits of the proposed approach, and in particular that the use of PIM increases the system throughput by at least $40\%$, without requiring any additional energy consumption.

TL;DR: A comparative view of neuronal repair across vertebrate species is provided, with a particular focus on the molecular pathways that enable repair in some, but not all animals.
Abstract: In all vertebrate species studied thus far, the adult central nervous system harbors neural stem cells that sustain constitutive neurogenesis, as well as latent neural progenitors that can be awakened in lesional contexts. In spite of this common theme, many species differ dramatically in their ability to recruit constitutive progenitors, to awaken latent progenitors, or to enhance or bias neural progenitor fate to achieve successful neuronal repair. This Review summarizes the striking similarities in the essential molecular and cellular properties of adult neural stem cells between different vertebrate species, both under physiological and reparative conditions. It also emphasizes the differences in the reparative process across evolution and how the study of non-mammalian models can provide insights into both basic neural stem cell properties and stimulatory cues shared between vertebrates, and subsequent neurogenic events, which are abortive under reparative conditions in mammals.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate several approaches to control Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) in ultrathin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.
Abstract: Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate several approaches to control Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) in ultrathin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. First, we find that DMI is significantly enhanced when the ferromagnetic (FM) layer is sandwiched between nonmagnetic (NM) layers inducing additive DMI in NM1/FM/NM2 structures. For instance, when two NM layers are chosen to induce DMI of opposite chirality in Co, e.g. NM1 representing Au, Ir, Al or Pb, and NM2 being Pt, the resulting DMI in NM1/Co/Pt trilayers is enhanced compared to Co/Pt bilayers. Moreover, DMI can be significantly enhanced further in case of using FM layer comprising Fe and Co layers. Namely, it is found that the DMI in Ir/Fe/Co/Pt structure can be enhanced by 80% compared to that of Co/Pt bilayers reaching a very large DMI amplitude of 5.59 meV/atom. Our second approach for enhancing DMI is to use oxide capping layer. We show that DMI is enhanced by 60% in Oxide/Co/Pt structures compared to Co/Pt bilayers. Moreover, we unveiled the DMI mechanism at Oxide/Co interface due to Rashba effect, which is different to Fert-Levy DMI at FM/NM interfaces. Finally, we demonstrate that DMI amplitude can be modulated using an electric field with an efficiency factor comparable to that of the electric field control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in transition metal/oxide interfaces. These approaches of DMI controlling pave the way for skyrmion and domain wall motion-based spintronic applications.

TL;DR: The current preclinical body of evidence clearly demonstrates that rAAV vectors can trigger both innate and adaptive immune responses, and data gathered from clinical trials offers key learnings on the immunogenicity of AAV vectors.
Abstract: Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors are one of the most promising in vivo gene delivery tools. Several features make rAAV vectors an ideal platform for gene transfer. However, the high homology with the parental wild-type virus, which often infects humans, poses limitations in terms of immune responses associated with this vector platform. Both humoral and cell-mediated immunity to wild-type AAV have been documented in healthy donors, and, at least in the case of anti-AAV antibodies, have been shown to have a potentially high impact on the outcome of gene transfer. While several factors can contribute to the overall immunogenicity of rAAV vectors, vector design and the total vector dose appear to be responsible of immune-mediated toxicities. While preclinical models have been less than ideal in predicting the outcome of gene transfer in humans, the current preclinical body of evidence clearly demonstrates that rAAV vectors can trigger both innate and adaptive immune responses. Data gathered from clinical trials offers key learnings on the immunogenicity of AAV vectors, highlighting challenges as well as the potential strategies that could help unlock the full therapeutic potential of in vivo gene transfer.
