Abstract: A transposable hobo element in the Notch locus of the Uc-1 X chromosome, which does not interfere with the normal expression of the locus, interacts with other hobo elements in the same X chromosome to produce Notch mutations. Almost all of these mutations are associated with deficiencies, inversions or other rearrangements, and hobo elements are present at each of the breakpoints. The Uc-1 X chromosome produces the Notch mutations at a rate of 4-8% in both sexes of flies in a strain that has been inbred for 96 generations. At least two-thirds of the mutations are produced in clusters suggesting that they have originated in mitotic (premeiotic) germ cells of the Uc-1 inbred strain. The interaction of hobo elements in the Uc-1 X chromosome can be repressed by at least two different mechanisms. One found in three inbred strains not related to the Uc-1 strain involves a maternal effect that is not attributable to the actions or products of hobo elements. Repression by this mechanism is manifested by a clear reciprocal cross effect so that the production of Notch mutations is repressed in the daughters of Uc-1 males, but not in the daughters of Uc-1 females. The other mechanism apparently requires genetic factors and/or hobo elements in a particular strain of Oregon-R; complete repression is present in both types of hybrids between Uc-1 and this strain.

Abstract: Second language teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is a sophisticated combination of pedagogical and content knowledge. This study explores the acquisition and articulation of PCK, highlighting the question of whether teacher education programs add to language teachers' knowledge base. Data was gathered using a performance assessment that incorporated teacher writing tasks in Spanish with a reflective paragraph to explain decisions made while writing. Areas of interest were language awareness, knowledge of effective teaching, and knowledge of learners. The study’s primary purpose is to reveal whether PCK differed in preservice Spanish teachers’ writing, as compared to Spanish Liberal Arts majors’ writing. Qualitative analysis revealed differing stages of PCK between the groups, suggesting teacher education’s influence on the preservice teachers’ performance.

Abstract: We have characterized the structural and energetic properties of CH3CN–BCl3via computations and matrix-IR spectroscopy. We find two equilibrium structures of the complex via computations. At the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level, the global minimum energy structure has a B–N distance of 1.601 A, and a binding energy of 12.0 kcal mol−1. The secondary structure lies 7.1 kcal mol−1 higher in energy with a B–N distance of 2.687 A and a binding energy of 4.9 kcal mol−1. Computational scans of the B–N potential curve using both DFT and post-HF methods indicate that a significant barrier exists between these structures, and that it lies 1 to 2 kcal mol−1 above the secondary minimum at a B–N distance of about 2.2 A. We also observed several key, structurally-sensitive IR bands for six isotopic forms of the complex in neon matrices, including: the B–Cl asymmetric stretching band (νaBCl) at 792 cm−1 and the C–N stretching band (νCN) at 2380 cm−1 (for the primary isotopomer, CH3C14N–11BCl3). These frequencies are consistent with computational predictions for the minimum-energy form of the complex. Energy decomposition analyses were conducted for CH3CN–BCl3 and also two related complexes, CH3CN–BF3 and CH3CN–BH3. These provide insight into the trend in Lewis acidity of the BX3 acceptors toward nitriles. Furthermore, these analyses indicate that the barrier along the B–N potential of CH3CN–BCl3 results from Pauli repulsion between the π electrons on the nitrile moiety and the chlorine atoms in BCl3, which is significant at relatively long distances where attractive bonding interactions fail to overcome it.
