TL;DR: The CSR strategies of vascular plants can be compared quantitatively within and between biomes at the global scale and the strategy–environment relationships it elucidates will help to predict which kinds of species may assemble in response to changes in biogeochemical cycles, climate and land use.
Abstract: Summary Competitor, stress-tolerator, ruderal (CSR) theory is a prominent plant functional strategy scheme previously applied to local floras. Globally, the wide geographic and phylogenetic coverage of available values of leaf area (LA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC) and specific leaf area (SLA) (representing, respectively, interspecific variation in plant size and conservative vs. acquisitive resource economics) promises the general application of CSR strategies across biomes, including the tropical forests hosting a large proportion of Earth's diversity. We used trait variation for 3068 tracheophytes (representing 198 families, six continents and 14 biomes) to create a globally calibrated CSR strategy calculator tool and investigate strategy–environment relationships across biomes world-wide. Due to disparity in trait availability globally, co-inertia analysis was used to check correspondence between a ‘wide geographic coverage, few traits’ data set and a ‘restricted coverage, many traits’ subset of 371 species for which 14 whole-plant, flowering, seed and leaf traits (including leaf nitrogen content) were available. CSR strategy/environment relationships within biomes were investigated using fourth-corner and RLQ analyses to determine strategy/climate specializations. Strong, significant concordance (RV = 0·597; P < 0·0001) was evident between the 14 trait multivariate space and when only LA, LDMC and SLA were used. Biomes such as tropical moist broadleaf forests exhibited strategy convergence (i.e. clustered around a CS/CSR median; C:S:R = 43:42:15%), with CS-selection associated with warm, stable situations (lesser temperature seasonality), with greater annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. Other biomes were characterized by strategy divergence: for example, deserts varied between xeromorphic perennials such as Larrea divaricata, classified as S-selected (C:S:R = 1:99:0%) and broadly R-selected annual herbs (e.g. Claytonia perfoliata; R/CR-selected; C:S:R = 21:0:79%). Strategy convergence was evident for several growth habits (e.g. trees) but not others (forbs). The CSR strategies of vascular plants can now be compared quantitatively within and between biomes at the global scale. Through known linkages between underlying leaf traits and growth rates, herbivory and decomposition rates, this method and the strategy–environment relationships it elucidates will help to predict which kinds of species may assemble in response to changes in biogeochemical cycles, climate and land use.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the relationship of three important visitor perceptions (i.e., service fairness, destination image, and service quality) with tourism destination loyalty through overall destination satisfaction and trust toward destination service providers.
Abstract: This study focuses on domestic tourists at a World Heritage Site located in China and investigates the relationship of three important visitor perceptions (i.e., service fairness, destination image, and service quality) with tourism destination loyalty (i.e., positive word-of-mouth referrals and revisit intentions) through overall destination satisfaction and trust toward destination service providers. The structural equation modeling findings generally support the conceptual model and indicate that service fairness and service quality have a significant and positive impact on overall destination satisfaction and trust toward destination service providers, while destination image has a significant effect on overall destination satisfaction but not on trust toward destination service providers. In addition, the investigated perceptions-loyalty relationships are found to be mediated by overall destination satisfaction, but not necessarily by trust toward destination service providers. The paper includes dis...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored supervisor-level antecedents of abusive supervision in the workplace and proposed a moderated mediation model to moderate the relationship between role overload and abusive supervision.
Abstract: Summary The current research explores supervisor-level antecedents of abusive supervision in the workplace. Specifically, this study introduces affective events theory to the abusive supervision literature to suggest that supervisor role overload, a work-related event, leads to supervisor frustration. As an intense negative emotional reaction, frustration, in turn, triggers supervisors to exhibit abusive behaviors in the workplace. Supervisor personality traits—namely, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and agreeableness—are also posited to moderate these hypothesized relationships. Specifically, neuroticism is expected to moderate the relationship between role overload and frustration while conscientiousness and agreeableness are expected to moderate the relationship between frustration and abusive supervision. Ultimately, we propose and examine a moderated-mediation model. Multisource field data demonstrate general support for the hypothesized relationships. We conclude with theoretical and practical implications as well as future research avenues. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: Harmonizing definitions of concepts, as proposed by TOP, forms the basis for better integration of data across heterogeneous data sets and terminologies, thereby increasing the potential for data reuse and enhanced scientific synthesis.
Abstract: Ecological research produces a tremendous amount of data, but the diversity in scales and topics covered and the ways in which studies are carried out result in large numbers of small, idiosyncratic data sets using heterogeneous terminologies. Such heterogeneity can be attributed, in part, to a lack of standards for acquiring, organizing and describing data. Here, we propose a terminological resource, a Thesaurus Of Plant characteristics (TOP), whose aim is to harmonize and formalize concepts for plant characteristics widely used in ecology. TOP concentrates on two types of plant characteristics: traits and environmental associations. It builds on previous initiatives for several aspects: (i) characteristics are designed following the entity-quality (EQ) model (a characteristic is modelled as the ‘Quality’ of an ‘Entity’ ) used in the context of Open Biological Ontologies; (ii) whenever possible, the Entities and Qualities are taken from existing terminology standards, mainly the Plant Ontology (PO) and Phenotypic Quality Ontology (PATO) ontologies; and (iii) whenever a characteristic already has a definition, if appropriate, it is reused and referenced. The development of TOP, which complies with semantic web principles, was carried out through the involvement of experts from both the ecology and the semantics research communities. Regular updates of TOP are planned, based on community feedback and involvement. TOP provides names, definitions, units, synonyms and related terms for about 850 plant characteristics. TOP is available online (www.top-thesaurus.org), and can be browsed using an alphabetical list of characteristics, a hierarchical tree of characteristics, a faceted and a free-text search, and through an Application Programming Interface. Synthesis. Harmonizing definitions of concepts, as proposed by TOP, forms the basis for better integration of data across heterogeneous data sets and terminologies, thereby increasing the potential for data reuse. It also allows enhanced scientific synthesis. TOP therefore has the potential to improve research and communication not only within the field of ecology, but also in related fields with interest in plant functioning and distribution.

TL;DR: In this article, the mesomeric form of lithium pentamethylene dithiocarbamate with a positive nitrogen center, formed in the discharge, can act as polysulfide and sulfide anchors through strong coulombic interactions thus enabling a capacity retention of 87% after 100 cycles at C/5 rate.
Abstract: Organosulfur compounds are cheap and abundant cathode materials that can offer high specific energies. Herein, we explore for the first time, the common vulcanization accelerators viz. thiuram polysulfides embedded in carbon nanotubes as binder-free cathodes in lithium batteries that show 3 highly reversible redox reactions (3 discharge plateaus) and high material utilization (up to 97%). We use electrochemical characterization techniques, first-principles calculations, XPS, XRD, FTIR, and SEM to gain insight into the chemical transformations occurring during battery cycling. We identify that the mesomeric form of lithium pentamethylene dithiocarbamate with a positive nitrogen center, formed in the discharge, can act as polysulfide and sulfide anchors through strong coulombic interactions thus enabling a capacity retention of 87% after 100 cycles at C/5 rate. A high loading cathode with an areal capacity of 5.3 mA h cm−2 tested under a low electrolyte to active material ratio of 3 μL mg−1 yields an active material specific energy of 1156 W h kg−1 thus demonstrating the potential of this class of compounds in high specific energy lithium batteries.

TL;DR: In this article, three bis(aryl) tetrasulfides as cathode materials in lithium batteries were studied. And the effects of the functional groups on the electrochemical characteristics of tetraulfides were investigated, which provided guidance for developing optimum aryl polysulfides for high energy lithium batteries.
Abstract: An organotetrasulfide consists of a linear chain of four sulfur atoms that could accept up to 6 e− in reduction reactions, thus providing a promising high-capacity electrode material. Herein, we study three bis(aryl) tetrasulfides as cathode materials in lithium batteries. Each tetrasulfide exhibits two major voltage regions in the discharge. The high voltage slope region is governed by the formation of persulfides and thiolates, and the low voltage plateau region is due to the formation of Li2S2/Li2S. Based on theoretical calculations and spectroscopic analysis, three reduction reaction processes are revealed, and the discharge products are identified. Lithium half cells with tetrasulfide catholytes deliver high specific capacities over 200 cycles. The effects of the functional groups on the electrochemical characteristics of tetrasulfides are investigated, which provides guidance for developing optimum aryl polysulfides as cathode materials for high energy lithium batteries.

TL;DR: Results from the current study suggest that individuals with 6 acts of NSSI in past year, compared with those with 5 acts or less, may represent a more severe group of self-injurers.
Abstract: Research suggesting nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) may belong in a distinct diagnostic category has led to the inclusion of NSSI disorder in the DSM-5 section for future study There has been limited research, however, examining the validity of Criterion A (the frequency criterion) The current study aimed to examine the validity of the frequency criterion of NSSI disorder through the use of an exploratory data mining method, structural equation modeling trees, as a way to determine a NSSI frequency that optimally discriminates pathological NSSI from normative behavior among undergraduate students (n = 3,559), 428 who engaged in NSSI in the previous year The model included psychopathology symptomology found to be comorbid with NSSI and cognitive-affective deficits commonly associated with NSSI Results demonstrated a first split between individuals with 0 and 1 act of NSSI in the past year, as was expected Among individuals with 1 or more previous acts, the optimal split was between those with 5 and 6 NSSI acts in the past year Results from the current study suggest that individuals with 6 acts of NSSI in past year, compared with those with 5 acts or less, may represent a more severe group of self-injurers These individuals reported higher levels of related psychopathology symptomology and cognitive-affective deficits, in addition to decreased quality of life Findings have potential implications for the proposed frequency criteria of NSSI disorder and how pathological NSSI is characterized (PsycINFO Database Record

TL;DR: The currently proposed DSM–5 Criterion-A frequency threshold for NSSI disorder lacks validity and clinical utility, and the field needs to consider raising the frequency threshold to ensure that a meaningful and valid set of diagnostic criteria are established, and to avoid overpathologizing individuals who infrequently engage in N SSI.
Abstract: Objective To empirically evaluate the diagnostic relevance of the proposed Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; APA, 2013) Criterion-A frequency threshold for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) disorder. Method Archival, de-identified, self-reported clinical assessment data from 746 adolescent psychiatric patients (Mage = 14.97; 88% female; 76% White) were used. The sample was randomly split into 2 unique samples for data analyses. Measures included assessments of NSSI, proposed DSM-5 NSSI-disorder criteria, psychopathology, dysfunction, distress, functional impairment, and suicidality. Results Discriminant-function analyses run with Sample A identified a significant differentiation of groups based on a frequency of NSSI at 25 or more days in the past year, Λ = .814, χ2(54) = 72.59, p 25 days), moderate (5-24 days), and low (1-4 days) and compared. The high-NSSI group scored higher on most NSSI features, including DSM-5-proposed Criterion-B and -C symptoms, depression, psychotic symptoms, substance abuse, borderline personality-disorder features, suicidal ideation, and suicide plans, than the moderate- and low-NSSI groups, who did not differ from each other on many of the variables. Conclusion The currently proposed DSM-5 Criterion-A frequency threshold for NSSI disorder lacks validity and clinical utility. The field needs to consider raising the frequency threshold to ensure that a meaningful and valid set of diagnostic criteria are established, and to avoid overpathologizing individuals who infrequently engage in NSSI. TL;DR: The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a measurement methodology based on pair-wise comparisons that relies on judgment to derive priority scales as mentioned in this paper, and one of the areas where the AHP finds application is in the subjective phases of risk assessment.
Abstract: The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a measurement methodology based on pair-wise comparisons that relies on judgment to derive priority scales. During its implementation, one constructs hierarchies, then makes judgments or performs measurements on pairs of elements with respect to a criterion to derive preference scales, which are then synthesized throughout the structure to select the preferred alternative. One of the areas where the AHP finds application is in the subjective phases of risk assessment (RA), where it is used to structure and prioritize diverse risk factors, including the judgments of experts. Since fuzzy logic (FL) has been shown to be an effective tool for accommodating human experts and their communication of linguistic variables, there has been research aimed at modeling the fuzziness in the AHP (FAHP), and recently the focus of some of that modeling has been with respect to RA. The literature discusses more than one FAHP model, which raises the question as to which are the prominent models and what are their characteristics. In response to this question, we examine three of the most influential FAHP models. The article proceeds as follows. It begins with a brief overview of the AHP and its limitations when confronted with a fuzzy environment. This is followed by a discussion of FL modifications of the AHP. A RA-based likelihood score example is used throughout. The article ends with a commentary on the findings.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on the attitudes of American dental hygienists towards chairside medical screening using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = very important/willing, 5 = very unimportant/unwilling).
Abstract: Objectives Targeted screening for medical conditions in a dental setting can be an effective strategy for early identification of individuals at increased disease risk. Dentists, patients and physicians have a favourable attitude towards this strategy. Given that dental hygienists (DHs) are involved in preventive and educational activities, this seems like a natural extension to their roles. We report on the attitudes of American DHs towards chairside medical screening. Methods A 5-point Likert scale (1 = very important/willing, 5 = very unimportant/unwilling) survey was mailed to a nationwide random sample of US practicing DHs. Descriptive statistics were used for all questions, and the Friedman nonparametric analysis of variance was used for multi-element questions. Results A total of 3133 respondents returned the completed questionnaires for an effective response rate of 49.2% and a margin of error 1.8%. The majority of respondents felt it was important to perform/conduct chairside screening for hypertension (94%), diabetes mellitus (89%), cardiovascular disease (85%), HIV (79%) and hepatitis infection (78%); were willing to refer a patient for medical consult (94%), conduct screening that yields immediate results (85%); and were willing to collect the data/samples needed (57–95%). The most important considerations were dentist/owner support (98%), training (97%), patient willingness (98%) and time (98%). Conclusion Similar to dentists, physicians and patients, the majority of the DHs had a favourable attitude towards chairside medical screening. Integrating the DH into screening activities is likely to require additional training and education regarding the diseases of interest, something that could be accomplished through continuing education courses and eventually incorporation into the educational curriculum.

Abstract: The government of China plays an important role in the external environment of private sector enterprises (PSEs), having a significant effect on their survival and development. Therefore, managing their relationship with the government becomes a key aspect of strategic decision-making and operating actions of PSEs. We extend the evidence of this by introducing a new dimension of political connection: partial state ownership of PSEs. Using a data set of 262 publically listed PSEs in China, we empirically investigate the effects of partial state ownership of PSEs on the access to bank loans.

Abstract: Despite the increasing awareness that sustainability is an issue needing ongoing attention, and despite millions of dollars spent yearly at universities to promote sustainable behaviors, previous research has found college students have primarily a unidimensional understanding of what sustainability encompasses. The current research sought to understand the depth of students' sustainability knowledge at one of the nation's “greenest” campuses and what implications this finding may have on future educational efforts. A representative sample of 779 students at a public liberal arts university were asked to define the term “sustainability” via an open-ended survey question. The survey also assessed students' knowledge of a dedicated on-campus sustainability office and preferred information sources and message channels. Definitions encompassing maintaining the status quo were the most prevalent, followed by definitions stating that sustainability had an environmental component. The least mentioned co...

Abstract: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in swimming pool water are hypothesized to originate from fill water and anthropogenic sources like urine, sweat, swimwear and body surfaces. However, research exploring PPCP origins in pools is lacking. This research investigates PPCP sources at 31 swimming pools. Pool water was analyzed for 24 representative PPCPs using advanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. Fill water was analyzed as a contamination source and to determine if swimmers introduce PPCPs to pools. Results show every PPCP in fill water was present in pools except one, suggesting fill water is a PPCP source at pools. The presence of the antidepressant fluoxetine in 26% of pools and 0% of fill water indicates swimmers introduce pharmaceuticals. The flame retardant (tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP)) was present 48% more frequently in pool than fill water, suggesting TCEP is introduced by body surfaces or swimwear. Enforcing showering and bathroom breaks is recommended to reduce PPCP contamination from swimmers.

TL;DR: Preliminary evidence suggesting the importance of symbol arrangement for young children is provided, and the need for caution when incorporating background color on displays for children with typical development is highlighted.
Abstract: Children whose speech does not meet their communication needs often benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The design of an AAC display may influence the child’s ability to communicate effectively. The current study examined how symbol background color cues and symbol arrangement affected construction of multi-symbol messages using line-drawing symbols, by young children with typical development. Participants (N = 52) heard a spoken phrase matching a photograph and selected line drawings within a 4 × 4 array. Friedman two-way ANOVAs evaluated speed and accuracy of multi-symbol message construction under four conditions in which the background color and arrangement of symbols was manipulated. Participants demonstrated significantly faster response times when symbols were arranged by word-class category compared to no symbol arrangement. The majority of children responded faster when symbols had white backgrounds, but this effect failed to reach statistical significance. This...

Abstract: The Vegetarian Finch, Platyspiza crassirostris, is a relatively unstudied Darwin's finch that appears to be in decline in the Galapagos Islands. We monitored 11 nests of Vegetarian Finches during 2013 and 2014 on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos, and found that 10 of these were infested with an invasive parasitic fly, Philornis downsi. This is the first report of P. downsi attacking this bird species. The number of P. downsi in nests of Vegetarian Finches was higher than for other Darwin's finch species, but nestling mortality was relatively low. We hypothesize that both of these trends may be related to fact that the Vegetarian Finch is one of the largest-bodied species of Darwin's finches. We also consider the conservation implications of P. downsi parasitism for populations of vegetarian finches and other Darwin's finch species in the Galapagos Islands.

TL;DR: The planar spore sheets of Grododowon gen. nov. are interpreted to have formed via the co-option of a prior vegetative gametophytic developmental pattern which was expressed in the zygote, resulting in a two-dimensional, thalloid bauplan.
Abstract: Cryptospores from the Dapingian–Darriwilian Kanosh Shale at Fossil Mountain, Utah, USA, occur as tetrads, dyads, irregular clusters, or planar sheets of spore dyads. These spore ‘thalli’ are placed into the new taxon Grododowon orthogonalis gen. et sp. nov. based on the nature of division patterning and gross overall shape. The antithetic hypothesis of embryophyte origins dictates that spores evolved first and that the vegetative sporophyte evolved later via mitotic cell divisions that preceded meiosis and spore formation. We interpret the planar spore sheets of Grododowon gen. nov. to have formed via the co-option of a prior vegetative gametophytic developmental pattern which was expressed in the zygote, resulting in a two-dimensional, thalloid bauplan. However, the ploidy of the resultant ‘spores’ as haploid is necessarily conjectural, and this pattern of growth is clearly not the ancestral condition in the streptophyte lineage that gave rise to the first axial plant sporophyte.
