The design of such a filigrane network requires the very careful control of chemical parameters and the reward is an assortment of different property profiles owing to the richness of possible variations.
Abstract
Air, air, air… and some solid skeleton; this is the basis for an interesting class of materials-the aerogels (shown schematically on the right). Can one therefore speak of "simple" chemistry? The design of such a filigrane network requires the very careful control of chemical parameters. The reward is an assortment of different property profiles owing to the richness of possible variations.

Synthesis of SiO2-Aerogel Inverse Opals in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

TL;DR: SiO2-aerogel inverse opals were produced for the first time in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) with three-dimensional (3D) latex arrays as templates as discussed by the authors.

Manipulation of pore size distributions in silica and ormosil gels dried under ambient pressure conditions

TL;DR: In this article, a collection of trends were identified in the evolution of porosity, pore size distributions, and surface area of gels dried from various alcohols and acetone/alkane mixtures.

Assemblies of thiol-capped nanocrystals as building blocks for use in nanotechnology

TL;DR: The assembly of strongly emitting semiconductor nanocrystals can be performed on flat, porous and spherical surfaces and thus are very important for thin-film technologies, doping of mesoporous materials, modification of pre-patterned substrates, the creation of microshells and cavities, etc as mentioned in this paper.

Sol-gel synthesis, porous structure, and mechanical property of polymethylsilsesquioxane aerogels

TL;DR: In this paper, a modified two-step sol-gel process was used to synthesize organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels with polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ, CH3SiO1.5) composition.
