TLDR
The design of such a filigrane network requires the very careful control of chemical parameters and the reward is an assortment of different property profiles owing to the richness of possible variations.Abstract:
Air, air, air… and some solid skeleton; this is the basis for an interesting class of materials-the aerogels (shown schematically on the right). Can one therefore speak of "simple" chemistry? The design of such a filigrane network requires the very careful control of chemical parameters. The reward is an assortment of different property profiles owing to the richness of possible variations.read more

Silica-silk fibroin hybrid (bio)aerogels: two-step versus one-step hybridization
TL;DR: Two sustainable sol–gel based approaches are proposed for hybridization of silica with SF and both led to a significant reduction in the time required to prepare strong hybrid aerogels compared to conventional hybrid polymer-silica aerogel with the utilization of an entirely aqueous synthesis approach for a wide range of applications.

Fabrication of super-macroporous nanocomposites by deposition of carbon nanotubes onto polymer cryogels
Petar Petrov,Georgi L. Georgiev +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a super-macroporous carbon nanotube/polymer cryogel nanocomposites were fabricated by a novel approach based on deposition of CNTs onto the inner surface of pre-formed cryogels assisted by cryogenic treatment.

Zirconia-based Aerogels via Hydrolysis of Salts and Alkoxides: The Influence of the Synthesis Procedures on the Properties of the Aerogels
TL;DR: It turned out that approaches based on inexpensive non-toxic salt precursors are the methods of choice for low-cost, easy-to-handle synthesis procedures with realizable gelation times of less than 60 seconds, but also delivered the products with the highest surface area within this series of syntheses.

Facile synthesis of silica aerogel composites via ambient-pressure drying without surface modification or solvent exchange
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of the fiber volume content on the physical and mechanical properties and thermal conductivities of the composites was investigated, and the results showed that the SACs with a fibervolume content of 5.7% exhibited the lowest thermal conductivity (0.101 and 0.0403 Wm−m−1 K−1 at 1100 −C and room temperature, respectively), highest contact angle (158.2°) and compressive strength ( 0.249 g cm−3).

Superinsulating BNNS/PVA Composite Aerogels with High Solar Reflectance for Energy-Efficient Buildings
Jie Yang,Kit-Ying Chan,Harun Venkatesan,Eunyoung Kim,M. Adegun,Jeng-hun Lee,Xi Shen,Jang Kyo Kim +7 more
TL;DR: In this article , a solvent-assisted freeze-casting strategy is used to produce boron nitride nanosheet/polyvinyl alcohol (BNNS/PVA) composite aerogels with a tailored alignment channel structure.
