Benefits of D2 lymph node dissection for patients with gastric cancer and pN0 and pN1 lymph node metastases

TLDR
The frequent occurrence of micro-involvement is a strong argument favouring routine D2 lymph node dissection in gastric cancer surgery in patients with lymph node metastasis.
Abstract
A retrospective immunohistological analysis of 100 patients with pT1-3 N0 and pT1-3 N1 gastric adenocarcinoma demonstrated a high frequency of micro-involvement in the removed lymph nodes. The presence of three or more tumour cells in more than 10 per cent of the lymph nodes was of significant prognostic value in the pN0 cases. Multivariate analysis identified micro-involvement as an independent prognostic factor. The results explain why patients benefit from lymphadenectomy even if the removed lymph nodes are not involved by tumour (pN0) in routine histological examination. The frequent occurrence of micro-involvement is a strong argument favouring routine D2 lymph node dissection in gastric cancer surgery in patients with lymph node metastasis.

Prediction of risk factors for lymph node metastasis in early gastric cancer

TL;DR: The depth of invasion was the only independent risk factor for lymph node metastases in EGC and risk factors for metastases should be considered when choosing surgery for EGC.

Assessment of lymph node micrometastasis in early gastric cancer in relation to sentinel nodes.

TL;DR: The indications for current EMR and reduced surgery in early gastric cancer are valid from the standpoint of micrometastases but if the SNNS that has been studied in recent years is introduced, the lymphatic basin dissection method seems valid only if the case is s-pN0 early cancer.

Clinical relevance of occult tumor cells in lymph nodes from gastric cancer patients.

TL;DR: In this article, the relation between disease recurrence and the presence of occult tumor cells (OTC) in lymph nodes from gastric cancer patients was evaluated, and the results showed that OTC-positive lymph nodes were the only significant independent risk factor for disease recurrences.

Detection and clinical implications of minimal residual disease in gastro-intestinal cancer

TL;DR: This review critically evaluates the prognostic impact of MRD in patients with pancreatic, colorectal and gastric cancer by outlining those studies showing diagnostic results of DTC detection in lymph nodes, bone marrow, venous blood and peritoneal lavage, some of which present novel strategies.

The Value of PET Imaging in Patients with Localized Gastroesophageal Cancer.

TL;DR: The MUNICON I study recently showed the utility of fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in predicting response and prognosis in AEG and indicated the feasibility of a PET-guided treatment algorithm, an important step forward in tailoring multimodal treatment to tumor biology.

Nonparametric Estimation from Incomplete Observations

TL;DR: In this article, the product-limit (PL) estimator was proposed to estimate the proportion of items in the population whose lifetimes would exceed t (in the absence of such losses), without making any assumption about the form of the function P(t).

Immunoenzymatic labeling of monoclonal antibodies using immune complexes of alkaline phosphatase and monoclonal anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP complexes).

TL;DR: The APAAP technique was found particularly suitable for labeling cell smears and for detecting low numbers of antigen-bearing cells in a specimen and could be used in conjunction with immunoperoxidase methods for double immunoenzymatic staining.
