TLDR
The carbon and environmental footprints associated with the global production of biofuels have been computed from a baseline of 2007-2009 out until 2019 as discussed by the authors, where the overall environmental footprint was disaggregated into bioproductive land, built land, carbon, embodied energy, materials and waste, transport, and water components.

Systems integration for global sustainability

TL;DR: Systems integration for global sustainability is poised for more rapid development, and transformative changes aimed at connecting disciplinary silos are needed to sustain an increasingly telecoupled world.
Journal ArticleDOI

Progress in biofuel production from gasification

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the progress in gasification techniques and key generation pathways for biofuel production, process design and integration and socio-environmental impacts of biofuel generation are discussed, with the goal of investigating gasification-to-biofuels credentials as a sustainable and eco-friendly technology.
Journal ArticleDOI

Review of evolution, technology and sustainability assessments of biofuel production

TL;DR: In this article, the state of the art of technologies and assessment methods on economic performance, safety, health and environment (SHE) as well as social impact for biofuel production are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toward a functional integration of anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis for a sustainable resource management. Comparison between solid-digestate and its derived pyrochar as soil amendment

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed screening of the physical and chemical properties of both solid-digestate and pyrochar was performed, inferring their effects on soil quality, and the results showed that while P and K are enriched in pyrochamber, total N showed no significant differences.

Alternative thermochemical routes for aviation biofuels via alcohols synthesis: Process modeling, techno-economic assessment and comparison

TL;DR: In this paper, the conceptual process design for the production of branched paraffins with high carbon number, based on the upgrading of alcohols synthesized from biomass-derived syngas and the economic evaluation and comparison with the Fischer-Tropsh (FT) process and biochemical pathways are described and modeled in ASPENPlus™.
