A high-efficiency broadband grating coupler for coupling between silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides and optical fibers and the size of the grooves is optimized numerically.
Abstract
We have designed a high-efficiency broadband grating coupler for coupling between silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides and optical fibers. The grating is only 13 µm long and 12 µm wide, and the size of the grooves is optimized numerically. For TE polarization the coupling loss to single-mode fiber is below 1 dB over a 35-nm wavelength range when using SOI with a two-pair bottom reflector. The tolerances to fabrication errors are also calculated.

Wide-angle emission grating using a supervised genetic optimization for LIDAR integration

TL;DR: This work presents an optimization approach to obtain a single grating antenna with wide-angle emission for a photonic integrated flash Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) system and relies on a supervised, data-centric approach in combination with a genetic algorithm optimization.

How to suppress radiative losses in high-contrast integrated optical gratings

TL;DR: In this paper , a series of symmetric, fully and partly etched finite gratings for parameters found in integrated silicon photonics are considered, and they are characterized by reflection bands or transmittance peaks with widths that span three orders of magnitude.

Tuning optical ring resonators with liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used ring resonators as basic components in (de-)multiplexers for optical networks and applied liquid crystals as a top layer on the chip to adjust the filtering of wavelengths.
