A high-efficiency broadband grating coupler for coupling between silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides and optical fibers and the size of the grooves is optimized numerically.
Abstract
We have designed a high-efficiency broadband grating coupler for coupling between silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides and optical fibers. The grating is only 13 µm long and 12 µm wide, and the size of the grooves is optimized numerically. For TE polarization the coupling loss to single-mode fiber is below 1 dB over a 35-nm wavelength range when using SOI with a two-pair bottom reflector. The tolerances to fabrication errors are also calculated.

DCAF - A Directly Connected Arbitration-Free Photonic Crossbar for Energy-Efficient High Performance Computing

TL;DR: Eliminating the need for arbitration, sizing the buffers carefully and retransmitting lost packets when there is contention results in a 44% reduction in average packet latency without additional power overhead, demonstrating that the overhead required by arbitration is non-trivial, especially at high loads.

High index contrast optical platform using gallium phosphide on sapphire: an alternative to SOI?

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report on the design and characteristics of GaP waveguides grown on c-plane (0001) sapphire substrates using metalorganic vapour phase (MOPP) and it is shown that growth parameters such as substrate temperature and the V:III ratio have their effect on the nucleation, surface roughness and uniformity of the films.
