TLDR
A novel strategy for identification of Carnobacterium food isolates based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of PCR-amplified 16S-23S ribosomal intergenic spacer regions (ISRs) was developed, which yielded four unique band patterns that correctly resolved these isolates into four Carnobacteria species without sequencing.

Carnobacterium: positive and negative effects in the environment and in foods.

TL;DR: The genus Carnobacterium contains nine species, but only C. divergens and C. maltaromaticum are frequently isolated from natural environments and foods and can be a fish pathogen, although carnobacteria are also suggested as probiotic cultures for use in aquaculture.

Examination of faecal Bifidobacterium populations in breast- and formula-fed infants during the first 18 months of life

TL;DR: Overall, inter- and intra-individual differences were observed in the Bifidobacterium populations of infants between 1 and 18 months of age, although weaning was associated with increased diversity of the infant B ifidobacteria populations.

Recent advances in molecular techniques to study microbial communities in food-associated matrices and processes.

TL;DR: Molecular methods will allow us to surpass the authors' current culturing limitations, thus revealing the extent and importance of the 'non-culturable' microbial flora that occurs in food matrices and production.

Carnobacterium divergens and Carnobacterium maltaromaticum as spoilers or protective cultures in meat and seafood: phenotypic and genotypic characterization.

TL;DR: Carnobacterium isolates possessed a biopreservative potential due to their production of bacteriocins with a wide inhibition spectrum and were found both in fresh and lightly preserved meat and seafood products.
Journal ArticleDOI

Selection and evaluation of seafood-borne psychrotrophic lactic acid bacteria as inhibitors of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria.

TL;DR: In this study, inhibitory psychrotrophic lactic acid bacteria were isolated and investigated for future use in biopreservation of seafood products and one out of seven isolates showed bacteriocin-like activity.

Classification of Lactobacillus divergens, Lactobacillus piscicola, and some catalase-negative, asporogenous, rod-shaped bacteria from poultry in a new genus, Carnobacterium.

TL;DR: The present study showed that the majority of the poultry strains could be allocated to the species Brochothrix thermosphacta, Lactobacillus divergens, and LactOBacillus piscicola, and the two unidentified poultry taxa should be classified in a new genus, Carnobacterium, as Carnobacteria diverGens comb.

16s rRNA and 16s to 23s Internal Transcribed Spacer Sequence Analyses Reveal Inter- and Intraspecific Bifidobacterium Phylogeny

TL;DR: This study studied Bifidobacterium phylogeny by performing both 16S rRNA and 16S to 23S (16S-23S) internally transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analyses, and found that the two trees were similar topologically, suggesting that theTwo types of molecules provided the same kind of phylogenetic information.

Study of the microbial ecology of cold-smoked salmon during storage at 8°C

TL;DR: The aerobic 20°C viable count reached its maximum level after 6 days however, the shelf-life of the product was estimated to be 2 or 3 weeks by the panellists, confirming that there is no correlation between those two factors.

Characteristics of lactic acid bacteria isolated from vacuum packaged beef

TL;DR: The characteristics of 177 psychrotrophic lactic acid bacteria isolated from vacuum-packaged fresh beef have been studied and the API 50 lactobacillus identification system proved useful in studying these organisms.
