Gut microbes and metabolites as modulators of blood-brain barrier integrity and brain health

TL;DR: Current evidence of the impact gut microbes and their metabolites have on blood-brain barrier integrity and brain function is summarized, and the communication networks between the gastrointestinal tract and brain, which they may modulate are summarized.

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis: From Motility to Mood

TL;DR: The role of the microbiome as an important factor in modulating gut-brain signaling has emerged and the concept of a microbiota-gut-brain axis has been established as discussed by the authors, highlighting the role of this axis in modifying enteric and central nervous system function and how this may impact disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and disorders of mood and affect.

Ingestion of Lactobacillus strain regulates emotional behavior and central GABA receptor expression in a mouse via the vagus nerve.

TL;DR: Chronic treatment with L. rhamnosus induced region-dependent alterations in GABAB1b mRNA in the brain with increases in cortical regions and concomitant reductions in expression in the hippocampus, amygdala, and locus coeruleus, in comparison with control-fed mice, highlighting the important role of bacteria in the bidirectional communication of the gut–brain axis.

The development of a six-item short-form of the state scale of the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)

TL;DR: Two studies are reported describing the development of a short-form of the state scale of the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) for use in circumstances where the full-form is inappropriate, and the six-item version offers a briefer and just as acceptable scale for subjects while maintaining results that are comparable to those obtained using the full form.
