Journal ArticleDOI

Recent developments in the field of bending rigidity measurements on membranes.

TL;DR: The effect on the bending rigidity of membranes as a function of membrane composition, presence of various inclusions in the bilayer and molecules and ions in the bathing solutions is summarized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prediction and decoding of retinal ganglion cell responses with a probabilistic spiking model.

TL;DR: The fitted model predicts the detailed time structure of responses to novel stimuli, accurately capturing the interaction between the spiking history and sensory stimulus selectivity, and can be used to derive an explicit, maximum-likelihood decoding rule for neural spike trains.
Journal ArticleDOI

A glimpse of the mechanisms of ion homeostasis during salt stress

TL;DR: The limiting role of vacuolar cation accumulation in salt tolerance has been demonstrated by expression in yeast vacuoles of the bacterial antiporter NhaA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Virus shapes and buckling transitions in spherical shells.

TL;DR: It is shown that the icosahedral packings of protein capsomeres proposed by Caspar and Klug for spherical viruses become unstable to faceting for sufficiently large virus size, in analogy with the buckling instability of disclinations in two-dimensional crystals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sterol structure determines the separation of phases and the curvature of the liquid-ordered phase in model membranes

TL;DR: It is found that the molecular structure of a sterol used for the preparation of GUVs determines its ability to induce phase separation and the curvature of the formed liquid-ordered phase, which can lead to a new type of budding behavior in GUVs.
