Journal ArticleDOI
Selective Depression of the Xenogeneic Cell-Mediated Lympholysis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
TL;DR: Observations indicate that depression of cell-mediated immunity in SLE patients may be associated with several mechanisms including a cellular one, specifically affecting the generation of killer T cells, and a humoral one possibly as a result of antilymphocytic antibodies and(or) immune complexes.
Journal ArticleDOI
IgM and IgG antibodies to DNA, RNA, and DNA:RNA in systemic lupus erythematosus.
TL;DR: Sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus were fractionated by sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation to determine the immunoglobulin class of anti-nucleic acid antibodies and IgM antibodies to RNA were quite prominent and in some patients were the only anti-RNA antibodies detected.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nucleosome-driven autoimmune response in lupus. Pathogenic T helper cell epitopes and costimulatory signals
TL;DR: To identify the primary immunogen(s) that drives the autoimmune response in this disease, cloned and analyzed the structures and specificities of the receptors expressed by the select population of T and B cells that are responsible for the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of natural and synthetic estrogens on the course of autoimmune disease in the nzb/nzw mouse
Sara Ellen Walker,Giles G. Bole +1 more
TL;DR: Treatment of hybrid New Zealand mice with mestranol, 17-pestradiol and oophorectomy exerts divergent effects on serum proteins and the development of serologic abnormalities.

Defective Viral Particles and Viral Disease Processes
Alice S. Huang,David Baltimore +1 more
TL;DR: Preparations of many different types of viruses contain defective particles which consist of viral structural proteins and a part of the viral genome and may play a major part in the evolution of viral diseases.
Book ChapterDOI
The immunology and pathology of nzb mice.
J. B. Howie,B J Helyer +1 more
TL;DR: This chapter discusses the New Zealand Black (NZB) strain of mice that has attracted the attention of investigators throughout the world as an experimental model for human connective tissue disease and describes the patterns of development of the disease processes in the two groups of mice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathogenesis of the glomerulonephritis of nzb/w mice
P. H. Lambert,Frank J. Dixon +1 more
TL;DR: Enhancement of the antinuclear antibody response by active immunization of young NZB/W mice with DNA-methylated BSA hastens the development and increases the severity of the glomerulonephritis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The development of malignant lymphoma in the course of Sjögren's syndrome
Norman Talal,Joseph J. Bunim +1 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis is presented that in Sjogren's syndrome the chronic state of immunologic hyperactivity and the proliferation of immunologically competent cells producing abnormal tissue antibodies predispose to the relatively frequent development of malignant lymphoma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathogenesis of chronic disease associated with persistent lymphocytic choriomeningitis viral infection. I. Relationship of antibody production to disease in neonatally infected mice.
TL;DR: The transfer of anti-LCM antibody to SWR/J carrier mice results in acute necrotizing inflammatory lesions in regions of viral persistence, followed by chronic mononuclear infiltrates quite similar to those seen after the transfer of immune cells.
