Next century challenges: mobile networking for “Smart Dust”

TLDR
This work reviews the key elements of the emergent technology of “Smart Dust” and outlines the research challenges they present to the mobile networking and systems community, which must provide coherent connectivity to large numbers of mobile network nodes co-located within a small volume.
Abstract
Large-scale networks of wireless sensors are becoming an active topic of research. Advances in hardware technology and engineering design have led to dramatic reductions in size, power consumption and cost for digital circuitry, wireless communications and Micro ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS). This has enabled very compact, autonomous and mobile nodes, each containing one or more sensors, computation and communication capabilities, and a power supply. The missing ingredient is the networking and applications layers needed to harness this revolutionary capability into a complete system. We review the key elements of the emergent technology of “Smart Dust” and outline the research challenges they present to the mobile networking and systems community, which must provide coherent connectivity to large numbers of mobile network nodes co-located within a small volume.

Prediction-Based Energy Map for Wireless Sensor Networks

TL;DR: This paper addresses the problem of constructing the energy map of a wireless sensor network using prediction-based approaches and presents an energy dissipation model that is used to simulate the behavior of a sensor node in terms of energy consumption.

Magnetic diffusion: disseminating mission-critical data for dynamic sensor networks

TL;DR: It is suggested that MD is an effective data dissemination solution to the mission-critical applications because it performs the best in timely delivery of data, achieves high data reliability in the presence of network dynamics, and yet works as energy efficiently as the state of the art.

One-Bit Distributed Sensing and Coding for Field Estimation in Sensor Networks

TL;DR: It is shown that when the noise, sensor placement pattern, and the sensor schedule satisfy certain weak technical requirements, it is possible to drive the MSE to zero with increasing sensor density at points of field continuity while ensuring that the per-sensor bit rate and sensing-related network overhead rate simultaneously go to zero.

The DARPA packet radio network protocols

TL;DR: The algorithms are described and illustrated how the PRNET provides highly reliable network transport and datagram service, by dynamically determining optimal routes, effectively controlling congestion, and fairly allocating the channel in the face of changing link conditions, mobility, and varying traffic loads.

The Diamond Age

TL;DR: The Diamond Age as discussed by the authors is a major novel from one of the most visionary writers of our time, with a protagonist who breaks the rigorous moral code of his tribe, the powerful Neo-Victorians, by making an illicit copy of a state-of-the-art interactive device called a young lady's illustrated primer.
