This work considers the achievable performance for coded systems adapted to a multipath block-fading channel model. This is a particularly useful model for analyzing mobile-radio systems which employ techniques such as slow frequency-hopping under stringent time-delay or bandwidth constraints for slowly time-varying channels. In such systems, coded information is transmitted over a small number of fading channels in order to achieve diversity. Bounds on the achievable performance due to coding are derived using information-theoretic techniques. It is shown that high diversity can be achieved using relatively simple codes as long as very high spectral efficiency is not required. Examples of simple block codes and carefully chosen trellis codes are given which yield, in some cases, performances approaching the information-theoretic bounds.read more

Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation
TL;DR: The theoretical foundations of BICM are reviewed under the unified framework of error exponents for mismatched decoding, which allows an accurate analysis without any particular assumptions on the length of the interleaver or independence between the multiple bits in a symbol.

Universal space-time coding
TL;DR: A universal framework is developed for constructing full-rate and full-diversity coherent space-time codes for systems with arbitrary numbers of transmit and receive antennas, which subsumes many of the existing codes in the literature, extends naturally to time- selective and frequency-selective channels, and allows for more flexibility in the tradeoff between power efficiency, bandwidth efficiency, and receiver complexity.

Practical relay networks: a generalization of hybrid-ARQ
Bin Zhao,Matthew C. Valenti +1 more
TL;DR: A practical approach to networks comprising multiple relays operating over orthogonal time slots is proposed based on a generalization of hybrid-automatic repeat request (ARQ), indicating a significant improvement in the energy-latency tradeoff when compared with conventional multihop protocols implemented as a cascade of point-to-point links.
