TLDR
The Xanthophyll cycle and thermal energy dissipation were investigated in this paper. But the results of these experiments were limited to the case of light-capturing systems, where active oxygen was not formed in the Photochemical Apparatus.Abstract:

Adenine nucleotides and the xanthophyll cycle in leaves. II. Comparison of the effects of CO2- and temperature-limited photosynthesis on photosystem II fluorescence quenching, the adenylate energy charge and violaxanthin de-epoxidation in cotton.
Adam M. Gilmore,Olle Björkman +1 more
TL;DR: Gilmore et al. as mentioned in this paper showed that decreases in photosynthesis and increases in the adenylate energy charge at steady state were both correlated with decreases in PSII photochemical efficiency as determined by chlorophyll fluorescence analysis.

The Use of the Fluorescence Signal in Studies of Seagrasses and Macroalgae
TL;DR: Considering that the main structural and most likely functional diversity of photosynthetic mechanisms is present in the wide taxonomic diversity of the aquatic environment, the study of the fluorescence signal on marine macrophytes presents unique challenges and opportunities for the better understanding of how photosynthesis organisms utilize light.

Acclimation to high irradiance in temperate deciduous trees in the field: changes in xanthophyll cycle pool size and in photosynthetic capacity along a canopy light gradient
TL;DR: To test the hypothesis that in temperate deciduous trees acclimation to potentially damaging high irradiances occurs via long-term adjustments in foliar photosynthetic capacity, and short-term changes in xanthophyll cycle pool size in response to weather fluctuations, nitrogen concentration and pigment composition were examined along a canopy light gradient, three species were examined.

Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus have Evolved Different Adaptive Mechanisms to Cope with Light and UV Stress
Daniella Mella-Flores,Christophe Six,Morgane Ratin,Frédéric Partensky,Christophe Boutte,Gildas Le Corguillé,Dominique Marie,Nicolas Blot,Priscillia Gourvil,Christian Kolowrat,Laurence Garczarek +10 more
TL;DR: While Synechococcus has developed efficient ways to cope with light and UV stress, Prochlorococcus cells seemingly survive stressful hours of the day by launching a minimal set of protection mechanisms and by temporarily bringing down several key metabolic processes.

Responses of photosystem I compared with photosystem II to high-light stress in tropical shade and sun leaves
TL;DR: It is shown that under high-light stress a high proportion of P700 accumulates in the oxidized state, P700 + .

The relationship between the quantum yield of photosynthetic electron transport and quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence
TL;DR: In this article, the quantum yield of non-cyclic electron transport was found to be directly proportional to the product of the photochemical fluorescence quenching (qQ) and the efficiency of excitation capture by open Photosystem II (PS II) reaction centres (Fv/Fm).

Photon yield of O2 evolution and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics at 77 K among vascular plants of diverse origins.
Olle Björkman,Barbara Demmig +1 more
TL;DR: Determinations of the photon yield of O2 evolution and the Fv/FM, 692 ratio can serve as excellent quantitative measures of photoinhibition of overall photosynthetic energy-conversion system and of photochemistry of photosystem II, respectively.

Plant Responses to Multiple Environmental FactorsPhysiological ecology provides tools for studying how interacting environmental resources control plant growth
TL;DR: Plant growth in diverse environments requires a similar balance of resources-energy, water, and mineral nutrients-to maintain optimal growth, but these resources differ by at least two orders of magnitude in the availability.

Comparison of the effect of excessive light on chlorophyll fluorescence (77K) and photon yield of O2 evolution in leaves of higher plants.
Barbara Demmig,Olle Björkman +1 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that high-light treatments can have at least two different, concurrent effects on 77K fluorescence in leaves, one results from damage to the photosystem II (PSII) reaction-center complex and leads to a rise in FO, 692; the other results from an increased non-radiative energy dissipation in the pigment bed.
Photoinhibition and zeaxanthin formation in intact leaves. A possible role of the xanthophyll cycle in the dissipation of excess light energy. [Populus balsamifera; Hedera; helix; Monstrosa deliciosa]
TL;DR: Comparative studies of chlorophyll a fluorescence and of the pigment composition of leaves suggest a specific role of zeaxanthin, a carotenoid formed in the xanthophyll cycle, in protecting the photosynthetic apparatus against the adverse effects of excessive light.
