TLDR
This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem- based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.
Abstract
In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of ""facts,"" facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn

Realising Authentic Science Learning through the Adaptation of Scientific Practice

TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of the CoVis Project and a discussion of the common themes that underlie a number of projects that are investigating the use of technology to support more authentic science practices in science classrooms is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Problem-Based Learning and Learning Approach: Is There a Relationship?.

TL;DR: A substantial shift towards a surface learning approach brings into question previous conclusions that PBL curricula foster a deep approach to learning, and suggests that other factors, such as work load, may be more determinants of learning approach than curriculum type.

Learning teamwork skills in university programming courses

TL;DR: The analysis of the main features of NUCLEO according to Activity Theory, as well as the experimental results obtained with the framework in three different case studies in university courses are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessment in Problem-Based Learning Medical Schools: A Literature Review

TL;DR: A critical review of the literature was conducted to explore whether the assessment methods match the philosophical tenets of PBL, revealing a lack of uniformity and consensus on the practical application of general principles.

The effect of problem-based learning in nursing education: a meta-analysis

TL;DR: It is found that the effect of PBL in nursing education is 0.70 standard deviations (medium-to-large effect size), and PBL has positive effects on the outcome domains of satisfaction with training, clinical education, and skill course.
