Problem-based learning : an approach to medical education

TLDR
This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem- based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.
Abstract
In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of ""facts,"" facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn

Virtual reality to improve group work skill and self-directed learning in problem-based learning narratives

TL;DR: This study explores how VR may be adopted to enable PBL and improve group work skill as well as self-directed learning and research results indicated that PBL with the presentation problem scenario in VR environment is effective in enhancing the group work skills and self- directed learning among students.
Journal ArticleDOI

Supporting students’ transition to university and Problem-Based Learning

TL;DR: A number of broad considerations and practical suggestions are offered to support learners’ transition to PBL and to university, particularly in a higher education landscape of learner-centeredness and social accountability in a globalising world of increasing learner diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Problem-based learning and clinical practice: The nurse practitioners' perspective.

TL;DR: It was found that information obtained in the PBL classroom could be directly applied to professional practice providing the NP with the skills needed for clinical decision making with a holistic viewpoint and satisfaction in clinical practice.

Exploring University Students’ Expectations and Beliefs about Physics and Physics Learning in a Problem-Based Learning Context

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of an exploratory study aimed to determine university students' expectations and beliefs in a problem-based introductory physics course, how those expectations compare to that of students in other universities, and change as a result of one semester of instruction.
