Problem-based learning : an approach to medical education

TLDR
This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem- based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn.
Abstract
In this book, the authors address some basic problems in the learning of biomedical science, medicine, and the other health sciences Students in most medical schools, especially in basic science courses, are required to memorize a large number of ""facts,"" facts which may or may not be relevant to medical practice Problem-based learning has two fundamental postulates--the learning through problem-solving is much more effective for creating a body of knowledge usable in the future, and that physician skills most important for patients are problem-solving skills, rather than memory skills This book presents the scientific basis of problem-based learning and goes on to describe the approaches to problem-based medical learning that have been developed over the years at McMaster University, largely by Barrows and Tamblyn

Problem-based learning and the medical school: another case of the emperor’s new clothes?

TL;DR: The constraints of the professional school are so different from those of the purely academic environment that PBL, while admirably suited to the latter, is just problem solving in the former.

PBL 2.0: enhancing problem-based learning through increased student participation

TL;DR: A new problem-based learning (PBL) method was tested to see if it reinvigorated the learning experience and was effective in increasing student interaction and promoting increased learning.

Learner centered higher education in East Asia: assessing the effects on student engagement

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the extent to which learner-centered education can be implemented successfully in the East Asian higher education context and present a quantitative study informed by a description of the context for implementation.

Teaching critical management skills: the role of problem-based learning

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the nature of individuals' experiences with learning and teaching in a problem-based learning (PBL) setting in the management discipline and concluded that successful PBL requires adequate structure and support to ensure that students move through the PBL cycle identified by Hmelo-Silver.
