Problems with measuring peripheral oxytocin: can the data on oxytocin and human behavior be trusted?

TLDR
Evaluation of commercially available methods for measuring OT reveals that they lack reliability when used on unextracted samples of human fluids, and that they tag molecules in addition to OT, yielding estimates that are wildly discrepant with an extensive body of earlier findings.

Journal ArticleDOI

A meta-analytic review of the correlation between peripheral oxytocin and cortisol concentrations.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the interplay between oxytocin and cortisol is dynamic and sensitive to the anticipation of stress or novelty, and extraction of Oxytocin appears to be an essential methodological practice.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lack of Association between Human Plasma Oxytocin and Interpersonal Trust in a Prisoner’s Dilemma Paradigm

TL;DR: Previous published work that used oxytocin immunoassays without sample extraction should be reexamined and future research exploring links between endogenous human Oxytocin and trust or social behavior should proceed with careful consideration of methods and appropriate biofluids for analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Preventing PTSD with oxytocin: effects of oxytocin administration on fear neurocircuitry and PTSD symptom development in recently trauma-exposed individuals

TL;DR: It is found that repeated intranasal oxytocin administration early posttrauma reduced subsequent PTSD symptom development in recently trauma-exposed emergency department patients with high acute PTSD symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oxytocin and Social Bonds: The Role of Oxytocin in Perceptions of Romantic Partners' Bonding Behavior.

TL;DR: In 129 romantically involved adults whose partner expressed gratitude to them in the lab, greater oxytocin over the prior 24 hr was associated with greater perceptions of the expresser’s responsiveness and gratitude, as well as greater experienced love, but not general affective reward.

Bioanalytical method validation--a revisit with a decade of progress.

TL;DR: The purpose of this report is to represent the progress in analytical methodologies over the last decade and assessment of the major agreements and issues discussed with regard to small molecules at both the conference and the workshop.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oxytocin, vasopressin, and the neurogenetics of sociality.

TL;DR: There is growing evidence that the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin modulate complex social behavior and social cognition and suggest that variation in the genes encoding their receptors may contribute to variation in human social behavior by altering brain function.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oxytocin and vasopressin in the human brain: social neuropeptides for translational medicine

TL;DR: OXT and AVP are emerging as targets for novel treatment approaches — particularly in synergistic combination with psychotherapy — for mental disorders characterized by social dysfunction, such as autism, social anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder and schizophrenia.

The Diagnostic Applications of Saliva— A Review:

TL;DR: Analysis of saliva may be useful for the diagnosis of hereditary disorders, autoimmune diseases, malignant and infectious diseases, and endocrine disorders, as well as in the assessment of therapeutic levels of drugs and the monitoring of illicit drug use.
Journal ArticleDOI

Balance of brain oxytocin and vasopressin: implications for anxiety, depression, and social behaviors

TL;DR: Shifting the balance between the neuropeptide systems towards oxytocin, by positive social stimuli and/or psychopharmacotherapy, may help to improve emotional behaviors and reinstate mental health.
