Biological roles of oligosaccharides: all of the theories are correct

TL;DR: The only common features of the varied functions of oligosaccharides are that they either mediate ‘specific recognition’ events or that they provide ‘modulation’ of biological processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Meta-analysis of risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder in trauma-exposed adults.

TL;DR: The effect size of all the risk factors was modest, but factors operating during or after the trauma, such as trauma severity, lack of social support, and additional life stress, had somewhat stronger effects than pretrauma factors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bibliometric Methods in Management and Organization

TL;DR: It is envisioned that bibliometric methods will complement meta-analysis and qualitative structured literature reviews as a method for reviewing and evaluating scientific literature and hold the potential to increase rigor and mitigate researcher bias in reviews of scientific literature.
Journal ArticleDOI

A global boom in hydropower dam construction

TL;DR: In this article, major new initiatives in hydropower development are now under way, and at least 3,700 major dams, each with a capacity of more than 1MW, are either planned or under construction, primarily in countries with emerging economies.

Technical review of the energy and protein requirements of growing pigs: food intake

TL;DR: Ileal true digestible protein and amino acid requirements are presented in a form consistent with that forwarded for energy, and algorithms are presented based upon protein turn-over which appear to be consistent with empirical findings.
Journal ArticleDOI

Relational norms and collaborative activities: Roles in reducing opportunism in marketing channels

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the role of relational governance in curbing opportunism in marketing channels and proposed that relational governance encompasses both relational norms and collaborative activities (i.e., joint planning and joint problem solving).
Journal ArticleDOI

Protection against oxidative damage by dihydroflavonols in Engelhardtia chrysolepis.

TL;DR: Dihydroflavonol taxifolin and its glycoside, astilbin, from Engelhardtia chrysolepis were evaluated as antioxidants and radical scavengers and found to be effective for protecting subcellular systems and red blood cells against oxidative stress in vitro.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spore UV and acceleration resistance of endolithic Bacillus pumilus and Bacillus subtilis isolates obtained from Sonoran desert basalt: implications for lithopanspermia.

TL;DR: Spore-forming bacteria from the interior of near-subsurface basalt rocks collected in the Sonoran desert near Tucson, Arizona were isolated and specific natural isolates of B. pumilus were found to be substantially more resistant to UV and extreme acceleration than were reference laboratory strains of Bacillus subtilis, suggesting that spores of environmental B. Pumilus isolates may be more likely to survive the rigors of interplanetary transfer.
