Residual stress. Part 1 – Measurement techniques

TLDR
In this paper, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stress, which are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate.
Abstract
Residual stress is that which remains in a body that is stationary and at equilibrium with its surroundings. It can be very detrimental to the performance of a material or the life of a component. Alternatively, beneficial residual stresses can be introduced deliberately. Residual stresses are more difficult to predict than the in-service stresses on which they superimpose. For this reason, it is important to have reliable methods for the measurement of these stresses and to understand the level of information they can provide. In this paper, which is the first part of a two part overview, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stresses. Different types of stress are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate. By comparing this length to the gauge volume of each technique, the capability of a range of techniques is assessed. In the sec...

The state of residual stresses in the Cu/Steel bonded laminates after ISF deformation: An experimental analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the state of in-plane residual stresses as a function of technological parameters was analyzed and it was found that the tool diameter and wall angle are the most influential parameters while the rotation is the least influential parameter in this regard.

Analysis of martensite transformation behaviour in welded joint using low transformation temperature welding wire

TL;DR: In this paper, a low transformation temperature welding (LTTW) wire has been found to improve the fatigue strength in welded joints, and the influence of the welding pass sequence on the residual stress distribution and fatigue strength was examined in a boxing fillet welded joint using LTTW.

Determining the Mechanism of In-Service Cylinder Distortion in Aluminum Engine Blocks with Cast-In Gray Iron Liners

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used neutron diffraction to evaluate residual stress along the Al cylinder bridge and the gray cast iron liners of distorted and undistorted engine blocks, and found that the middle of the cylinder had the highest magnitude of distortion since this region had a combination of high tensile residual stress (hoop stress of 150 MPa) and reduced strength compared with the bottom of cylinder.

Two-layer nanocomposite WC/a-C coatings produced by a combination of pulsed arc evaporation and electro-spark deposition in vacuum

TL;DR: In this paper, a pulsed arc evaporation (PAE) and electro-spark deposition (ESD) in vacuum was developed and implemented to coat Ti with two-layer WC/a-C coating using the same WC-6%Co electrode.

Residual stress. Part 2 – Nature and origins

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the nature and origins of residual stresses across a range of scales, from the long range residual stress fields in engineering components and welded structures, through the interphase stresses present in composites and coatings, to the microscale interactions of phase transformations with local stresses.
