Residual stress. Part 1 – Measurement techniques
TLDR
In this paper, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stress, which are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate.Abstract:
Residual stress is that which remains in a body that is stationary and at equilibrium with its surroundings. It can be very detrimental to the performance of a material or the life of a component. Alternatively, beneficial residual stresses can be introduced deliberately. Residual stresses are more difficult to predict than the in-service stresses on which they superimpose. For this reason, it is important to have reliable methods for the measurement of these stresses and to understand the level of information they can provide. In this paper, which is the first part of a two part overview, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stresses. Different types of stress are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate. By comparing this length to the gauge volume of each technique, the capability of a range of techniques is assessed. In the sec...read more

In-situ XRD study on the effects of stress relaxation and phase transformation heat treatments on mechanical and microstructural behaviour of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V
Frederico Rossi Kaschel,Rajani K. Vijayaraghavan,Patrick J. McNally,Denis P. Dowling,Mert Celikin +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between crystallographic evolution during isothermal treatments and mechanical behavior, and found that isothermal treatment conducted between 550 and 700°C promotes martensitic decomposition, resulting in the formation of a transitional phase, which has an asymmetrical hexagonal crystal lattice.

Elastic constants of pure body-centered cubic Mg in nanolaminates
TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed density functional theory calculations and a strain energy-based elasticity method to calculate the lattice and elastic constants of pure body-centered cubic (bcc) Mg, which can exist as a pseudo-morphic phase when coherently bonded with a substantially stiffer bcc metal such as Nb.

Atomistic calculation of internal stress in nanoscale polycrystalline materials

TL;DR: In this paper, the internal stress in polycrystalline copper with nanosized grains was determined using atomistic calculation, and the results showed highly non-uniform internal stress distribution, which depends sensitively on grain size and grain shape anisotropy.

Analysis of lattice parameter changes following deformation of a 0.19C-1.63Si-1.59Mn transformation-induced plasticity sheet steel
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured residual stresses in the ferrite matrix and found that these residual stresses increased with increasing effective strain in specimens tested in biaxial tension and plane strain.

General approach to residual stresses determination in thin-walled structures by combining the hole drilling method and reflection hologram interferometry
TL;DR: In this paper, the problem of determining residual stresses by combining the hole-drilling method and whole-field displacement measurements is considered in detail, and the relations that are needed for converting initial experimental data into stress values of interest are presented for thin-walled plane structures.

Residual stress. Part 2 – Nature and origins
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the nature and origins of residual stresses across a range of scales, from the long range residual stress fields in engineering components and welded structures, through the interphase stresses present in composites and coatings, to the microscale interactions of phase transformations with local stresses.
