Residual stress. Part 1 – Measurement techniques

TLDR
In this paper, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stress, which are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate.
Abstract
Residual stress is that which remains in a body that is stationary and at equilibrium with its surroundings. It can be very detrimental to the performance of a material or the life of a component. Alternatively, beneficial residual stresses can be introduced deliberately. Residual stresses are more difficult to predict than the in-service stresses on which they superimpose. For this reason, it is important to have reliable methods for the measurement of these stresses and to understand the level of information they can provide. In this paper, which is the first part of a two part overview, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stresses. Different types of stress are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate. By comparing this length to the gauge volume of each technique, the capability of a range of techniques is assessed. In the sec...

Corrosion performance of additively manufactured stainless steel parts: A review

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of additively manufactured stainless steel parts made by LPBF and DLD is analyzed in comparison to their conventional counterparts. But, there are still controversies around some important aspects such as passive film structure, residual stress, post heat treatment processes, and grain size distribution and their impact on corrosion performance.

The effect of surface plastic deformation produced by shot peening on corrosion behavior of a low-alloy steel

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of shot peening process on the electrochemical properties of a low-alloy steel were examined in the present study, where microstructural, morphological and surface properties of samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM and 3D surface profilometer.

Eigenstrain analysis of residual strains and stresses

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a residual stress-admissible (RSadmissible) field, which is a divergence-free stress field that satisfies stress equilibrium conditions everywhere in the object to the greatest possible level of detail.

A perspective on residual stresses in welding

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present recent research on calculation, measurement and alleviation of residual stresses in welding, including non-uniform simultaneous heating and cooling, local variation in shrinkage because of variable cooling rates in different regions of the weld, and strains associated with metallurgical phase transformations.

The effect of hatch angle rotation on parts manufactured using selective laser melting

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of hatch rotation angles on the properties of the parts of a selective laser melting (SLM) scan and found that the hatch rotation angle had little effect on the density, top surface roughness and strength of parts.

Residual stress. Part 2 – Nature and origins

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the nature and origins of residual stresses across a range of scales, from the long range residual stress fields in engineering components and welded structures, through the interphase stresses present in composites and coatings, to the microscale interactions of phase transformations with local stresses.
