TLDR
An overview of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over both continental and ocean surfaces, mainly from observational and modelling perspectives, is given in this paper, where the authors present exciting challenges so far as improved understanding of ABL behaviour and improved representation of the ABL in numerical models of the atmosphere are concerned.

Aerosol and boundary-layer interactions and impact on air quality

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the major advances in aerosol measurements, PBL processes and their interactions with each other through complex feedback mechanisms, and highlight the priorities for future studies.

The climatology of planetary boundary layer height in China derived fromradiosonde and reanalysis data

TL;DR: Li et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a comprehensive investigation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) in China from January-2011 to July-2015, using the fine-resolution sounding observations made across China and reanalysis data, and found that the boundary layer height is generally higher in spring and summer than that in fall and winter.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mesoscale shallow convection in the atmosphere

TL;DR: A review of the observational, experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies of mesoscale shallow convection (MSC) in the atmosphere can be found in this paper, where a review of theoretical and laboratory analyses and numerical modeling of MSC is presented.

Classification of summertime synoptic patterns in Beijing and their associations with boundary layer structure affecting aerosol pollution

TL;DR: In this paper, the obliquely rotated principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to classify the summertime synoptic conditions over Beijing using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction reanalysis from 2011 to 2014, and investigated their relationships with PBL structure and aerosol pollution by combining numerical simulations, measurements of surface meteorological variables, fine-resolution soundings, the concentration of particles with diameters less than or equal to 2.5 µm, total cloud cover (CLD), and reanalysis data.

An Introduction to Boundary Layer Meteorology

TL;DR: In this article, the boundary layer is defined as the boundary of a boundary layer, and the spectral gap is used to measure the spectral properties of the boundary layers of a turbulent flow.

Development of a turbulence closure model for geophysical fluid problems

TL;DR: The second-moment turbulent closure hypothesis has been applied to geophysical fluid problems since 1973, when genuine predictive skill in coping with the effects of stratification was demonstrated as discussed by the authors.

On the Assessment of Surface Heat Flux and Evaporation Using Large-Scale Parameters

TL;DR: In this article, the large-scale parameterization of the surface fluxes of sensible and latent heat is properly expressed in terms of energetic considerations over land while formulas of the bulk aerodynamic type are most suitahle over the sea.

Spectral Characteristics of Surface-Layer Turbulence

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described the behavior of spectra and cospectra of turbulence in the surface layer using wind and temperature fluctuation data obtained in the 1968 AFCRL Kansas experiments.
