The resistance to tearing of a rubber vulcanizate is usually determined by loading in a specified manner a test-piece of the vulcanizate of standard shape, in which a notch has been produced, either in the molding process or by cutting the test-piece in a standard fashion. A wide variety of shapes of test-piece and notch and of methods of loading have been recommended by various authors (see, for example, Buist1).read more

The Trousers Test for Rupture
K.N. Sawyers,Ronald S. Rivlin +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that in the trousers test for rupture of an elastic material, which undergoes large deformations, the force required to tear a test piece of given width depends on the relative widths of the two legs.

Extrusion, slide, and rupture of an elastomeric seal
TL;DR: In this article, a method to study elastomeric seals by using the pressure-extrusion curve (i.e., the relation between the drop of pressure across a seal and the volume of extrusion of the elastomers) was described.

Some observations on the tearing of ductile materials
D.P. Isherwood,J. G. Williams +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a relationship between tearing force and tensile properties is deduced by analogy with notched tensile failure and proves to be quite accurate in predicting the tearing forces of a wide range of materials.

Effect of microstructural damage on the mechanical properties of silica nanoparticle-reinforced silicone rubber composites
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the microscopic damage mechanism and its effect on the mechanical properties of silicone rubber-based composites reinforced by surface unmodified and modified nanoparticles, which is helpful not only for the understanding of mechanical performance of nanoparticle-reinforced flexible elastomer composites, but also for the design of novel flexible composites with matching strength and toughness.

Crack layer analysis of fatigue crack propagation in rubber compounds
TL;DR: In this article, a methodology to characterize the resistance of rubber compounds to crack propagation (fracture toughness) is presented and a constitutive model based on the crack layer theory is utilized to extract the specific energy of damage γ*, a material parameter characteristic of the material's resistance to crack propagating and the dissipative characteristic, β.

Large elastic deformations of isotropic materials IV. further developments of the general theory
TL;DR: In this article, the surface forces necessary to produce simple shear in a cuboid of either compressible or incompressible material and those required to generate simple torsion in a right-circular cylinder of incompressibly material are derived.

Large Elastic Deformations of Isotropic Materials. VII. Experiments on the Deformation of Rubber
R. S. Rivlin,D. W. Saunders +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the load-deformation curves obtained for certain simple types of deformation of vulcanized rubber test-pieces in terms of a single stored energy function can be interpreted on the basis of the theory of large elastic deformations of incompressible isotropic materials.

An analysis of the conditions for rupture due to griffith cracks
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a model in which the crack is bounded by the atoms centred on the planes z =±½a, these planes being the boundaries of two semi-infinite elastic solids.
