Sensorimotor synchronization: A review of recent research (2006–2012)

TLDR
It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years, and more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field is surveyed.
Abstract
Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.

D-Jogger : an interactive music system for gait synchronisation with applications for sports and rehabilitation

Bart Moens
TL;DR: The findings suggest that the velocity effect depends on vigour entrainment that influences both stride length and pacing, and is relevant for preventing injuries, for gait improvement in walking rehabilitation, and for improving performance in sports activities.

The Increasing Effect of Interoception on Brain Frontal Responsiveness During a Socially Framed Motor Synchronization Task

TL;DR: The present study suggests that when a joint task is performed and the individual focuses on his/her physiological body reactions, the brain hemodynamic correlates are “boosted” in neuroanatomical regions that support sustained attention, reorientation of attention, social responsiveness, and synchronization.

Effects of a partner's tap intervals on an individual's timing control increase in slow-tempo dyad synchronisation using finger-tapping.

TL;DR: It was found that timing control in dyad synchronisation was affected by the partner’s tempo more strongly in slow than fast tempos, and this strong effect of the partner in slow-tempo rhythm synchronisation could be due to stronger attention to the partner's movement timing in slower tempos than in fast Tempos.

Differential sensory cortical involvement in auditory and visual sensorimotor temporal recalibration: Evidence from transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

TL;DR: The robustness of auditory‐motor TRE, unaffected by tDCS, suggests the dominance of the auditory system in temporal processing, by providing a frame of reference in the realignment of sensorimotor timing signals.

Gait coordination in overground walking with a virtual reality avatar.

TL;DR: Although the mean magnitude of synchronization strength index was overall comparable in both visual conditions when walking under the instruction to synchronize steps, quantitative and qualitative differences were found which might be associated with common limitations of VR solutions.

The cortical organization of speech processing

TL;DR: A dual-stream model of speech processing is outlined that assumes that the ventral stream is largely bilaterally organized — although there are important computational differences between the left- and right-hemisphere systems — and that the dorsal stream is strongly left- Hemisphere dominant.

Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound

TL;DR: Auditory Scene Analysis as discussed by the authors addresses the problem of hearing complex auditory environments, using a series of creative analogies to describe the process required of the human auditory system as it analyzes mixtures of sounds to recover descriptions of individual sounds.

Statistical Analysis of Circular Data

TL;DR: This book presents a meta-modelling framework for analysing two or more samples of unimodal data from von Mises distributions, and some modern Statistical Techniques for Testing and Estimation used in this study.

A theoretical model of phase transitions in human hand movements

TL;DR: A theoretical model, using concepts central to the interdisciplinary field of synergetics and nonlinear oscillator theory, is developed, which reproduces the dramatic change in coordinative pattern observed between the hands.

What makes us tick? Functional and neural mechanisms of interval timing

TL;DR: It is proposed that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and tells the time by detecting the coincidental activation of different neural populations.
