Sensorimotor synchronization: A review of recent research (2006–2012)

TLDR
It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years, and more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field is surveyed.
Abstract
Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.

Gait complexity is acutely restored in older adults when walking to a fractal-like visual stimulus.

TL;DR: Investigating the effect of a variable fractal-like visual stimulus on the stride-to-stride fluctuations of older adults during overground walking found positive effects were retained even when the stimulus was turned off for the fractal condition, practically, acutely restoring gait complexity of Older adults.

Correspondences Between Music and Involuntary Human Micromotion During Standstill.

TL;DR: The proposed analysis techniques provide quantitative data and metrics on the correspondences between micromotion and music, with the EDM stimulus producing the clearest music-induced motion patterns.

Evolving perceptual biases for antisynchrony: a form of temporal coordination beyond synchrony.

TL;DR: Three unrelated experiments are linked and inserted into a broader quantitative framework, toward an integrative neuro-evolutionary framework of temporal coordination.

Mental Representations in Musical Processing and their Role in Action-Perception Loops

TL;DR: In this paper, the cerebral correlates of constructive music imagination have been investigated and it was shown that mental representations underlying imagery are multimodal, informed and modulated by the body and its in-and outputs, while perception and action are informed by predictions based on mental models.

Optimizing beat synchronized running to music.

TL;DR: Results indicate that gender plays an important role when using forced phase algorithms: effects were more pronounced for the female population than for the male population and the implementation of the proposed alignment strategies and control of beat timing while running opens possibilities optimizing the individual running cadence and motivation.

The cortical organization of speech processing

TL;DR: A dual-stream model of speech processing is outlined that assumes that the ventral stream is largely bilaterally organized — although there are important computational differences between the left- and right-hemisphere systems — and that the dorsal stream is strongly left- Hemisphere dominant.

Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound

TL;DR: Auditory Scene Analysis as discussed by the authors addresses the problem of hearing complex auditory environments, using a series of creative analogies to describe the process required of the human auditory system as it analyzes mixtures of sounds to recover descriptions of individual sounds.

Statistical Analysis of Circular Data

TL;DR: This book presents a meta-modelling framework for analysing two or more samples of unimodal data from von Mises distributions, and some modern Statistical Techniques for Testing and Estimation used in this study.

A theoretical model of phase transitions in human hand movements

TL;DR: A theoretical model, using concepts central to the interdisciplinary field of synergetics and nonlinear oscillator theory, is developed, which reproduces the dramatic change in coordinative pattern observed between the hands.

What makes us tick? Functional and neural mechanisms of interval timing

TL;DR: It is proposed that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and tells the time by detecting the coincidental activation of different neural populations.
