It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years, and more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field is surveyed.Abstract:
Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.read more

Effects of pitch and tempo of auditory rhythms on spontaneous movement entrainment and stabilisation.
TL;DR: The results showed that participants’ movements spontaneously entrained to auditory rhythms, and that this effect was stronger with low-pitched rhythms independently of stimulation and movement tempi, while stabilisation effects were found to depend on intrinsic movement variability.

Bringing Sounds into Use: Thinking of Sounds as Materials and a Sketch of Auditory Affordances
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that information is instan- tiated through use and therefore is an emergent effect of a perceiver's interaction with their environment, drawing on theory from psychology, philosophy and anthropology.

Delayed feedback embedded in perception-action coordination cycles results in anticipation behavior during synchronized rhythmic action: A dynamical systems approach.
TL;DR: A dynamical systems model based on a model consisting of an oscillator receiving its own delayed activity as input explains various anticipatory behaviors, and has potential to inform theories of adaptive human synchronization.

Got rhythm? Better inhibitory control is linked with more consistent drumming and enhanced neural tracking of the musical beat in adult percussionists and nonpercussionists
TL;DR: Assessment of adult percussionists and nonpercussionists on inhibitory control, selective attention, basic drumming skills (self-paced, paced, and continuation drumming), and cortical evoked responses to an auditory stimulus presented on versus off the beat of music presents the first evidence that enhanced inhibitoryControl in musicians may be mediated by rhythmic expertise.

Auditory feedback in error-based learning of motor regularity.
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that humans engage in auditory feedback error-based learning to improve movement quality and reduce variability in sequence tapping, elucidate the mechanism by which high temporal precision of movement can be achieved through sound in a way that may not be possible with less temporally precise somatosensory modalities.

The cortical organization of speech processing
Gregory Hickok,David Poeppel +1 more
TL;DR: A dual-stream model of speech processing is outlined that assumes that the ventral stream is largely bilaterally organized — although there are important computational differences between the left- and right-hemisphere systems — and that the dorsal stream is strongly left- Hemisphere dominant.

Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound
TL;DR: Auditory Scene Analysis as discussed by the authors addresses the problem of hearing complex auditory environments, using a series of creative analogies to describe the process required of the human auditory system as it analyzes mixtures of sounds to recover descriptions of individual sounds.

Statistical Analysis of Circular Data
TL;DR: This book presents a meta-modelling framework for analysing two or more samples of unimodal data from von Mises distributions, and some modern Statistical Techniques for Testing and Estimation used in this study.

A theoretical model of phase transitions in human hand movements
TL;DR: A theoretical model, using concepts central to the interdisciplinary field of synergetics and nonlinear oscillator theory, is developed, which reproduces the dramatic change in coordinative pattern observed between the hands.

What makes us tick? Functional and neural mechanisms of interval timing
Catalin V. Buhusi,Warren H. Meck +1 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and tells the time by detecting the coincidental activation of different neural populations.
