Sensorimotor synchronization: A review of recent research (2006–2012)

TLDR
It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years, and more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field is surveyed.
Abstract
Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.

Temporal and spatiotemporal perturbations in paced finger tapping point to a common mechanism for the processing of time errors

TL;DR: This work decouple the parameter-and-variable confounding of traditional temporal perturbations and performs novel perturbation where either the parameter only changes or the variable only changes, compatible with the idea of a common mechanism for the correction of all types of asynchronies.

The Effect of Auditory Pulse Clarity on Sensorimotor Synchronization

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between auditory pulse clarity and sensorimotor synchronization performance, along with the influence of musical training, and found that the importance of clear and distinct pulses to timing performance in synchronization tasks such as music and dance.

Acting out and enactment: An effort at clarity

TL;DR: Acting out and enactment are terms in widespread use colloquially and in psychoanalytic psychotherapy to describe patient and therapist behavior as mentioned in this paper and have varied in interpretation as theoretical frameworks have changed.

In search of the beat

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors argue that experiences of beat are forms of auditory perception, and they defend a form of anthropocentric realism about beats: beats are mind-independent properties of sound sequences whose nature can be understood only in relation to our perceptual capacities.

Gait complexity assessed by detrended fluctuation analysis is sensitive to inconsistencies in stride time series: A modeling study

TL;DR: A nonlinear sensitivity of DFA to the mix of correlated and anti-correlated time series was evidenced, suggesting that in case of changes in gait control during a walking trial, the resulting time series may be a patchy ensemble of several fluctuation regimes.

The cortical organization of speech processing

TL;DR: A dual-stream model of speech processing is outlined that assumes that the ventral stream is largely bilaterally organized — although there are important computational differences between the left- and right-hemisphere systems — and that the dorsal stream is strongly left- Hemisphere dominant.

Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound

TL;DR: Auditory Scene Analysis as discussed by the authors addresses the problem of hearing complex auditory environments, using a series of creative analogies to describe the process required of the human auditory system as it analyzes mixtures of sounds to recover descriptions of individual sounds.

Statistical Analysis of Circular Data

TL;DR: This book presents a meta-modelling framework for analysing two or more samples of unimodal data from von Mises distributions, and some modern Statistical Techniques for Testing and Estimation used in this study.

A theoretical model of phase transitions in human hand movements

TL;DR: A theoretical model, using concepts central to the interdisciplinary field of synergetics and nonlinear oscillator theory, is developed, which reproduces the dramatic change in coordinative pattern observed between the hands.

What makes us tick? Functional and neural mechanisms of interval timing

TL;DR: It is proposed that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and tells the time by detecting the coincidental activation of different neural populations.
