Sensorimotor synchronization: A review of recent research (2006–2012)

It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years, and more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field is surveyed.Abstract:
Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.read more

The SoundBike: musical sonification strategies to enhance cyclists’ spontaneous synchronization to external music
TL;DR: The results of this experiment suggest that sonification of cyclists’ motor rhythm may increase their tendency to synchronize to external music, and helps to keep a more stable pedal cadence, compared to the condition of having external music only (without sonification).

Timing deviations in jazz performance: The relationships of selected musical variables on horizontal and vertical timing relations: A case study
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the effects and relationships of selected musical variables on the horizontal and vertical timing properties of jazz rhythm, including metrical beat placement, melodic character, intervals, articulation, underlying harmony, and tempo.

Neural responses to perturbations in visual and auditory metronomes during sensorimotor synchronization
TL;DR: The visual system is less developed for synchronizing and error correction with flashing rhythms by its more gradual error correction than the auditory system, suggesting the mechanisms of SMS are not completely domain general.

An ecological approach to measuring synchronization abilities across the animal kingdom.

TL;DR: In this paper, an ecological approach was proposed to study nonhuman animal synchronization abilities across the animal kingdom, focusing on the study of synchronization ability across the animals across the entire world.

Timing Markers of Interaction Quality During Semi-Hocket Singing.

TL;DR: The results show that estimated quality correlates with fluctuation and narration errors, while agency correlates (to a lesser degree) with narration errors.

The cortical organization of speech processing
Gregory Hickok,David Poeppel +1 more
TL;DR: A dual-stream model of speech processing is outlined that assumes that the ventral stream is largely bilaterally organized — although there are important computational differences between the left- and right-hemisphere systems — and that the dorsal stream is strongly left- Hemisphere dominant.

Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound
TL;DR: Auditory Scene Analysis as discussed by the authors addresses the problem of hearing complex auditory environments, using a series of creative analogies to describe the process required of the human auditory system as it analyzes mixtures of sounds to recover descriptions of individual sounds.

Statistical Analysis of Circular Data
TL;DR: This book presents a meta-modelling framework for analysing two or more samples of unimodal data from von Mises distributions, and some modern Statistical Techniques for Testing and Estimation used in this study.

A theoretical model of phase transitions in human hand movements
TL;DR: A theoretical model, using concepts central to the interdisciplinary field of synergetics and nonlinear oscillator theory, is developed, which reproduces the dramatic change in coordinative pattern observed between the hands.

What makes us tick? Functional and neural mechanisms of interval timing

TL;DR: It is proposed that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and tells the time by detecting the coincidental activation of different neural populations.
