Sensorimotor synchronization: A review of recent research (2006–2012)

TLDR
It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years, and more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field is surveyed.Abstract:
Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.read more

Electrophysiological activity from the eye muscles, cerebellum and cerebrum during reflexive and voluntarily timed blinks
TL;DR: In this article , the role of the cerebellum and cerebrum in motor learning of timed movements was investigated in a classical eye-blink conditioning procedure with an auditory tone as conditional stimulus (CS) and vestibular unconditional stimulus (US) in the form of a double head-tap.

The spontaneous emergence of rhythmic coordination in turn taking
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated how joint action partners learn to coordinate the timing of turn-taking, and found that partners did not achieve the same level of performance accuracy or precision of inter-tap intervals (ITI) when producing tapping sequences jointly relative to individually, despite showing learning (increased ITI accuracy and precision across the experiment) in both tasks.

Collective Rhythm as an Emergent Property During Human Social Coordination
TL;DR: In this article , the authors review the evidence for the existence of group-level rhythmic patterns that result from social interactions and argue that the complexity of group dynamics can lead to temporal regularities that cannot be predicted from the individual periodicities: an emergent collective rhythm.

Audio-Motor Synchronization Tests For Cognitive Functions Assessment In Children With Cns Lesions
TL;DR: The results suggest that degree of brain damage after cancer and treatment is associated with ability to synchronize arm movements with auditory cues, and Healthy children are able to anticipate stimuli, but ALL and especially PFT patients mostly reacted after stimulus onset.

The cortical organization of speech processing
Gregory Hickok,David Poeppel +1 more
TL;DR: A dual-stream model of speech processing is outlined that assumes that the ventral stream is largely bilaterally organized — although there are important computational differences between the left- and right-hemisphere systems — and that the dorsal stream is strongly left- Hemisphere dominant.

Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound
TL;DR: Auditory Scene Analysis as discussed by the authors addresses the problem of hearing complex auditory environments, using a series of creative analogies to describe the process required of the human auditory system as it analyzes mixtures of sounds to recover descriptions of individual sounds.

Statistical Analysis of Circular Data
TL;DR: This book presents a meta-modelling framework for analysing two or more samples of unimodal data from von Mises distributions, and some modern Statistical Techniques for Testing and Estimation used in this study.

A theoretical model of phase transitions in human hand movements
TL;DR: A theoretical model, using concepts central to the interdisciplinary field of synergetics and nonlinear oscillator theory, is developed, which reproduces the dramatic change in coordinative pattern observed between the hands.

What makes us tick? Functional and neural mechanisms of interval timing
Catalin V. Buhusi,Warren H. Meck +1 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that the brain represents time in a distributed manner and tells the time by detecting the coincidental activation of different neural populations.
