Shift work and cardiovascular risk factors: new knowledge from the past decade.

TLDR
A review of English-language literature dealing with the link between cardiovascular factors and shift workers (published during 2000-2010) was conducted, finding an impact of shift work on blood pressure, lipid profile, metabolic syndrome and, possibly, body mass index is unclear.

Circadian misalignment and health

TL;DR: The role of circadian misalignment as a risk factor for disease in the general population and in clinical populations, including circadian rhythm sleep disorders and psychiatric disorders is described.

Circadian rhythms and the molecular clock in cardiovascular biology and disease.

TL;DR: The authors suggest how circadian rhythms can be exploited, such as in chronotherapy, or targeted therapeutically, by exploiting or altering molecular time to improve existing therapies and develop novel ones.

Meta-analysis on shift work and risks of specific obesity types.

TL;DR: This systematic review and meta‐analysis evaluated the associations between shift work patterns and risks of specific types of obesity in men and women in the United States.

Circadian regulation of metabolism

TL;DR: Current understanding of the interplay between circadian clocks and metabolism is reviewed, in addition to the pathophysiologic consequences of disruption of this molecular mechanism, in terms of cardiometabolic disease development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sleep Duration and Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Epidemiologic and Experimental Evidence.

TL;DR: Current data support the concept that inadequate sleep duration confers heightened cardiovascular risk, and implementation of preventative strategies may reduce the potential disease burden associated with this high-risk behavior.

Inflammation, Atherosclerosis, and Coronary Artery Disease

TL;DR: The evidence is recounted that atherosclerosis, the main cause of CAD, is an inflammatory disease in which immune mechanisms interact with metabolic risk factors to initiate, propagate, and activate lesions in the arterial tree.
Journal ArticleDOI

The metabolic syndrome

TL;DR: The pathophysiology seems to be largely attributable to insulin resistance with excessive flux of fatty acids implicated, and a proinflammatory state probably contributes to the metabolic syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Metabolic Syndrome

TL;DR: The "metabolic syndrome" is a clustering of components that reflect overnutrition, sedentary lifestyles, and resultant excess adiposity that is associated with an approximate doubling of cardiovascular disease risk and a 5-fold increased risk for incident type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Health disorders of shift workers.

TL;DR: The strongest evidence exists for an association with peptic ulcer disease, coronary heart disease and compromised pregnancy outcome and working at night or on shift systems.

Is there an association between shift work and having a metabolic syndrome? Results from a population based study of 27 485 people

TL;DR: Obesity, high triglycerides, and low concentrations of HDL cholesterol seem to cluster together more often in shift workers than in day workers, which might indicate an association between shift work and the metabolic syndrome.
